For 6-Pack, a landmark day

They did it! CNN's Sixpack,  Joaquin Brignoni, Stasia Cirricione, Kendrick Henley, Nina Lovel, Kas Seerla, and Scott Zahn,  are officially triathletes after successfully completing the Nautica New York City Triathlon on Sunday, as part of the Fit Nation 2011 Triathlon Challenge.

The adventure began bright and early when the group met at 3:40 a.m. to be shuttled over to the race site. It was pouring rain and a little chilly but nothing could dampen the morning's excitement. After a delayed race start, the Sixpack jumped in to the Hudson around 6:40 a.m. All finished the race, with Joaquin Brignoni coming in first for the 6-Pack.

As part of the Triathlon Challenge, each person teamed up with a triathlon coach in his or her hometown. Several of those coaches joined the crew for their race in New York, including Mary Ann Sedor, Keither Klebacha, Dawn McPherson, Regan Kust, and Corey Kunzer.

The day was not without some tragedy and near misses, however. Kust was involved in a bike wreck along the West Side Highway and had to have several stitches to her wrist. According to Bill Burke, the race director of the NYC Triathlon, two devastating incidents occurred during the swim portion of the race. A 64-year-old male athlete died and a 40-year-old female remains in critical condition at a local New York City hospital. The cause of both incidents is unknown at this time.

Other members of the CNN Fit Nation team who completed the  race include Anthony Fox, John Bonifield, William Hudson, Trish Henry, Caleb Hellerman, David Martin, Tim Langmaid, Charlie Moore, Roni Selig, and Jeff Kepnes.

  1. mandatory training

I wonder if once yearly mandatory triathalons should become a part of our culture. Society would really have to shape up and that alone would tremendously reform our healthcare situation. Bravo to all the participants! It isn't even about being "thin", it's about being in shape and that's just plain healthy.

...is the team name supposed to be ironic?

Am glad that the SixPack completed the triathlon with flying colors – Sanjay must be so proud of them now, while he sets up to report out of Somalia. Rather bittersweet for him, certainly, but then there's always another year, right? Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Scott and the rest of the Sixpack. I hope you are proud of what you accomplished. Many people don't have the determination or heart to push themselves as you did. You are a positive example and inspiration to many!

Way to go! The amount of training and sacrifice paid off-you did it!!!! No one can ever take that from you, and you are now one of maybe 1% of Americans who have ever completed a tri. You should be so proud.

Congratulations but a little concerned that the gentleman on the left doesn't seem to have lost much weight training for a triathlon which is more arduous than a marathon!!

Really? Didn't your Mama teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say, you should shut your mouth? They're out there competing in a 3-hr-race, while you're probably sitting on the couch typing your rude comments. Unless you're capable of doing what they just did, you should really bite your tongue.

While the redesign of the site is cute, there hhisegt responsibility is to the information they broadcast to the largest audience. That is still TV. And I must say that CNN is increasingly incomplete and unsatisfactory on their coverage of the news. I am actually a big fan of the content available online for there Latino in America series. However what they broadcasted for the largest audiences was terribly incomplete and unoriginal. Cute site, but substance is king. so far I will judge them as a bit of smoke and mirrors.

So maybe you should try a triathlon sometime. You'd probably be puking half way through.

Training for a triathlon does not a guarantee that you will loose weight. You will loose FAT and it will be replaced with MUSCLE, so while they may not LOOK fit on the outside they certainly are on the inside. Congrats triathletes!

It is ok but isn't ideal. The only concern I would have is that after biikng and running you increase the liklihood of cramping in the water. Not a good thing! All long distance races have swimmming first for this reason. It's an issue of safety.

Couldn't they have found more flattering pairs of shorts for this team? They look terrible on everyone.
