U.S.: Catching bin Laden justifies CIA vaccination ruseA senior U.S. official on Thursday acknowledged CIA involvement in a vaccination campaign in Pakistan, but said it was a legitimate piece of the strategy for catching Osama bin Laden, who was killed by a U.S. raid on his hideout in Abbottabad in May. "This was one small piece of a very large intelligence effort to determine that bin Laden was located at the compound, and it was conducted shortly before the May 1 raid. People need to put this into some perspective,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The vaccination campaign was part of the hunt for the world’s top terrorist, and nothing else. If the United States hadn’t shown this kind of creativity, people would be scratching their heads asking why it hadn’t used all tools at its disposal to find bin Laden." The comments are a response to criticism of the CIA role, which involved health workers going door to door in the neighborhood near bin Laden’s compound, offering vaccinations against Hepatitis B. According to reports in the Guardian and the New York Times, the goal was to collect DNA to aid in the eventual identification of bin Laden. It’s not clear if the mission was successful. According to the senior U.S. official, “This was an actual vaccination campaign conducted by real medical professionals. It wasn’t some kind of fake public health effort." The official added, “The plan was for everyone to get the full course of treatments. The disruption of the campaign occurred because medical professionals were rounded up." The Pakistani doctor who led the vaccination effort was later detained by Pakistani security forces. Earlier Thursday, the aid group Doctors Without Borders issued a statement calling the CIA’s involvement, “a dangerous abuse of medical care.” Dr. Unni Karunakara, the group’s president, said, “The risk is that vulnerable communities—anywhere—needing access to essential health services will understandably question the true motivation of medical workers and humanitarian aid. The potential consequence is that even basic health care, including vaccination, does not reach those who need it most.” Doctors Without Borders currently offers care in several regions of Pakistan. Karunakara said that heightened mistrust would make working conditions more dangerous to health workers there, and in other countries. |

I want the same explanation from the Polish government leader of my terrorist state cause I am not sure they are aware they committed treason against their own people in exchange for some bull hit.
And why Hillary wants the DNA of diplomats whose where about s are known..
The thing with Tewow HU is that even if your most trusted adviser gets cancer, or some other bizarre disease, they may still refuse western medicine because they are not trash. Give it to their little precious girl HU, which has nearly the same DNA code as daddy, with virtually the same plausibility parameters, and the absolute in human trash will have about 100 times the success rate.
Our whoop animal would never do that to a magical girl...
Think about it.
Still want to know why the FBI has access to every single citizen's medical records...
Law enforcement does not have access to medical records without a grand jury subpoena or a search warrant signed by a judge.
Are you sure??
Pretty sure it is in the Patriot Act, along with "any other tangible thing"
And where it goes from there, with the President's claim of everywhere and forever war time power, is tough to figure out.
To sick to be true is the best place to hide trash and this country, with its strong assumptions, is the deepest dumpster with the Office of the President putting Kim Jong Ill to shame whether I want to believe it or not.
I was recently at my HMO for medical care and they have a patient bill of rights on the wall. as i read it I could only think is said if ant law enforcement agency wanted access to my medical records, that they would roll over and give up everything without a struggle, and no warrant needed.
That is incorrect. The FBI can take anything now without a warrant. In fact, not only do they not need a warrant now to search your home, but they can do it without ever even letting you know that they did.
Just take the medication as perscribed
And what is it exactly that you are hiding in your medical records. They can have mine. If you haven't done anything wrong, who cares?
Stop questioning your government. You must be a terrorist.
think about what? i dident understand anthing you just wrote here..
Shame on the CIA. When the the Taliban starts kidnapping and beheading doctors. Blame the CIA
Yes because they dont kill and behead doctors or blow up hospitals now or anything.
Definitely, I wonder if that is how the CIA works with every confident/doctor/etc they "use"? I want to get this straight! So the CIA released information on how they caught B. Laden that led to the capture of the doctor's who probably didn't even know themselves about the plot which in turn made it seem as if they were involved? How could they not have known? Really disgraceful stuff.
Much more disgraceful than using people who where unaware of the plan during 9/11.
exodus84 that had me rolling on the floor. Nice one!
Yeah blame the CIA for these islamic animals standard method of execution, Congrats to the CIA , American Warriors protecting your butt.
Yeah, shame on the CIA for using the middle letter of their name to get the world's most wanted terrorist. I guess they should have just put up missing person signs in the streets of Pakistani cities.
@Scott Wolf
My butt doesn't need protecting.
Yep they have to protect your butt too, even if you don't understand why.
Shame on Jeffrey for blaming the CIA. If you're an American citizen, please don't exercise your right to vote ever again.
Yes, I agree fully. This has put EVERY international aid worker in danger. They no longer have a legitimate reason for being seen as separate from international military operations. Trade offs people. Is catching one person enough to endanger every humanitarian aid worker for the rest of time? Since the latter is much more important and meaningful, I think not.
@exodus – ahm, actually that is WHY they kill journalists and doctors.. this is not the first time such clandestine operations have been caught, so they tend to suspect such people as being spys....
No, we will blame the Taliban, as we should. Not acting because you are afraid of extremists' reaction to it is exactly how terrorism functions.
I'm not defending this, by the way – I don't think they should have done it, but not because we're worried about what the terrorists might do.
It was a clever ruse, but may have some severe consequences. I imaging it could become very difficult to conduct vaccine campaigns, particularly in war-torn regions or areas where there is corrupt government (most of the third world), when those in power may stop the campaign for fear the CIA may be collecting evidence from them.
Also shame on you all for reading this propaganda...
You have not even opened the dumpster of these shameful ucks...
Trash in, trash out...
Secure my Interests general...
just shows CIA doesn't care about the consequences to the rest of the world as long as it furthers its own goals
You are obviously a democrat.
Funny how hostile and stupid people become when they aren't privy to every last bit of information about a particular topic. The problem is that you don't have a need to know everything, and you never will. You make $20k a year in a non-productive environment and your lack of content in posing your common sense-lacking opinion illustrates my point. Uneducated citizens are the catalyst in driving this great country into the ground.
My dogs could figure out why the CIA used these tactics and comprehend the reasoning. Why is it so difficult for you? Also, why do you think this is going to lead to more problems? Is it because someone on one of your democrat forums said so? You do realize that terrorists do not care who they kill as long as they kill. Wait, you don't know that.
It doesn't matter what tactics are used. If terrorists want to use that as an excuse to target a specific group, the ONLY reason to do so would be to make our people fear trying any other tactic. I guess it's working, Captain Fearboy. While you go cry in a corner, the real men and women will be taking care of business. Make sure you keep a box of tissues handy to soak up all those tears of yours.
@Cathy
Just so there is no confusion ... Republicans are the uneducated ones driving this great country to the ground.
Obama's 2012 slogan: I KILLED OSAMA
Cathy...You're my new hero.
Beam Me Up Scotty....Just so there's no confusion, the poor and uneducated overwhelming vote Democrat. Not, that I agree with Cathy's statements, but remember, Dems are always yelling that the Repubs are the party of the rich, right? Well, with money comes education. You can't have it both ways.
Haha nice one Cathy, you're an ignorant republican I see. I am actually a doctor and I am pretty sure I earn more money than you. I have friends in Doctors Without Borders and so I take personally stupid moves like this by the CIA that can compromise their well being. That's the only reason I made my post. Your entire ramble doesn't apply to me and it just makes you look like a judgmental idiot trying to sound smart. Nice try though.
P.S. 20K is what I spend on average on a vacation.
Hold on a 2nd Cathy! Your dogs were trained by the CIA? What's a catalyst? That's some sort of rock, right?
Cathy, Cathy, Cathy......and Dan. The right wing is such a wellspring of entertainment for the rest of us. First of all, the right wing has never had to suffer under the stigma of being know as the educated party. Remember, you guys have Dan Quayle, Sarah Palin and Bill O'Reillly. That should be enough, but to automatically turn this into a political party issue shows the very shallow depths that your thoughts seem to bottom out at. Dan, just because someone has a lot of money has no bearing on their intelligence. My parents are republicans and they refused to use any of their money to help educate their children. My brother, who is a Ph.D. and a brilliant mathematician put himself through school. He is as far left as you can see with the naked eye. George W. Bush comes from a family of money and he is as dumb as a rake. Having a bunch of money only means you have a bunch of money. Unfortunately it also means your way will probably be paved for you no matter what your intentions are.
Dan, come on. Do some basic research (as I did)...start with the 2004 election of George Bush, and compare state-by-state voting patterns with average level of educational achievement. You'll find that there's an inverse relationship between average education level and percentage of votes for Bush. The states with the lowest average educational achievement had the highest percentage of voters going for the GOP candidate, and the states with the highest average education had the highest percentages for the Democrats. Nice try, but the smallest bit of research readily proves that conservatism is the default political bent of the stupid.
The CIA is critically lacking for deontological voices who could discourage this sh&t. All the negative comments above are accurate, alas... The CIA is a tragically revenge-oriented, stupid organization whose only skill is effective lying.
This thread is a perfect example of why discourse in our country has become so dysfunctional. Too many idealogues resorting to personal attacks and irrelevant arguments to try to make points. Grow up lefties and righties. Try to stay on topic, please.
Thank you Cathy for being one of the only people who have made a bit of sense. I just don't think that I will ever understand why people (not all of you but many) have bever served in the military, never worked for the DOD or simular governemnt agency, and for the most part haven't even been outside of the U.S. yet they think they have all the answers when it comes to U.S. foreign policy.
Every other country would have vaccinated them with enough radioactive material so they could be tracked from Mars, but not here, we are worried about the dire consequences of tracking down and killing a monster. We have gotten so soft; we are not worthy of occupying the top dog spot. Lets let China and Russia have that particular distinction while we cower in our warm soft safe little world our parents created for us. You know, they would not pull any of that crap, or who do you think will take our place?
America was never meant to be "top dog." George Washington wanted us to be as far removed from world events as possible. Its not our responsibility to police the world and make sure everyone lives by American standards.
whatever...in the end they got the sob...
@leecherius; they got a scapegoat is what they got
Scapegoat? Were you born this morning?
LMAO!! Yeah, cuz he was really a good guy - just misuderstood, right?
Agreed!
THE END JUSTIFIED THE MEANS!
I believe that was Hitler's rationale as well....
That's what hitler would have said while killing jews
I don't see why anyone is complaining. Do you think the taliban were saying "Oh, lets hit the World Trade Center. There are no humanitarian programs being run from there. Its just financial advisors, and who wants them anyway?" No. They were trying to make the biggest impact possible. And just so yall know, the CIA follows the Geneva convention to the letter, far more than the Taliban or KGB ever have. Juct be glad the Americans took out the son of a biscuit eater that killed 3000 people without collateral damage and stop complaining about the means to a relatively peaceful end.
And are were suppose to believe a man that can't spell "just" properly?
Henry, ever hear of a typo? Have a prune.
Lol... 10 years of war and you still dont know the difference between taliban n al qaeda... lol... with this background info for waging wars... i'm pretty sure we'll rule the whole world in couple more millenia
You ARE naive!!!! "...to the LETTER"??? The CIA is bound by NOTHING!!!!!!!! I suppose you were once a deep cover agent and followed the GC " to the LETTER" while conducting your "Hannah Montana" operations??? In your dreams doesn't count, sweetie. Go back and play with your "My Little Pony" toys and do not comment on things that you know nothing about.
I don't blame the CIA for doing it; I blame them for GETTING CAUGHT doing it! Running illegal operations on foreign soil is their job. Does anybody doubt that? But they need to keep this stuff secret, or else they simply make the U.S. look bad. Torture? Yeah, it's wrong. But the biggest problem for the U.S. is that they CIA GOT CAUGHT! Humanitarian organizations do great work, but now they are completely compromised. The CIA has a history of using American government employees overseas and non-government organizations (NGOs) to collect information. To people living outside the U.S., this is well known. It's too bad that we're going down this road again...AND GETTING CAUGHT!
is this really up for debate? In the attempt to capture/kill the most wanted man in the world we vaccinated some civilians. The CIA shouldn't even comment on this rubbish, they know what our media is going to say
I am a Pakistani living in Canada for many years. American Government is so powerful that they can do anything in any country, especially my country Pakistan. American Government gives money to the corrupt leaders and organizations of my country, Pakistan. In return, Americans become free to demonstrate military power by droning as many people as they want in the name of terrorism. American agents driving on a city highway in Pakistan can get away killing innocent bystanders. Americans!...my country is weak, only 60 years young, newly democratic, and full of hard working and loving people. Please don't kills us in the name of terrorism. Instead, help us if you can to become a progressive country like India. We are scared from your drones and your injection needles. American drones are breeding terrorism among villagers in Pakistan.
Sounds like innocent muslim. Here is expert advise: Try to Report to CIA as many suspected+extremist Muslims friends, mullahs you can think of and know of. I bet, Pakistan can be better than India in next 60 years.
I also bet, you will not report any single of them even if you know they are in fact terrorist.
I am replying to NIK.
I have lived in Pakistan for nineteen years, and I visit frequently my family in Pakistan. I have not met a single person with the views you have mentioned. But I have noticed that the American Bombs have transformed Pakistani Society into more religious society over the last ten or more years. I can understand that American economic power and American military power can sustain droning the whole region, and its innocent people in the name of an engineered phenomenon called terrorism. Please don't kill these innocent people and don't change them into ultra religious people. Let them live with their families, so that they work hard to earn a living in their villages. You can test your weapons in an isolated area in outer space where there are no species of any kind. Pakistanis don't want to be better than indians. Just have peace with India and live a progressive life with good family values is the dream of every Pakistani.
Khan, if you really are who you say you are, please know that Americans don't bomb buildings and other structures because we think we have a better architectural design. These places usually have bad people that do bad things.
Khan, "drone" is NOT a transitive verb. Like as in "droning" someone. Nice effort at creativity, though.
Your people helped to arm N. Korea and iran with nuclear weapons They train and arm the thugs that kill US service personnel. They operate terrorist groups in India murdering innocents, and after taking so much American funding you are complaining? We should evaporate the pakis.
I guess you are right. You seem like knowing the truth. I have no idea about the truth. But according to your story, the American Governement should not help the Pakistani Government. But, instead, US Government gives billions to the corrupt leaders and organizations of Pakistan, inspite of knowing all the truth that you just stated, and then keeps killing these innocent villagers on a daily basis by using drone technology. My argument is that as a result of killing these poor villagers, the society at large, which is poor, is becoming more fanatic, and then US Government bombs them even further. I hope you see the reason what I am saying. I just want to get the point across that there should be a mechanism, in US Government, to hold those accountable for the crime, but not the innocent ones.
In reply to CTYank.
Thanks for pointing the grammer mistake. Pointing mistakes can help someone to learn. Thanks again..
Kahn, more US citizens need to know what is really going on. Sadly, our information is filtered. Americans accept the explanation of 'They hate us for our freedom' and they are religious extremists – and that's why they attack us. But there has to be more to it. There is a lot more that we do not know. More people need to hear what you have to say about what really happens. Unfortunately, there is a lot of rude and dumb people on the internet. Since they have a lot of free time, they will talk a lot. It seems you are patient and know to over look them.
Thanks Amie.
Please watch this video. Fatima bhutto is an eminent writer and very active in Pakistan's socio-political scene. You will get the point of view of majority of Pakistanis. Please help innocent Pakistanis and poor villagers have a life from American Power.

Late to the party, I know, but drone can be used as a transitive verb (with a definition not used in that context). It's courteous for nitpickers to be precise when offering corrections.
Are we stupid to leak out CIA methods of tracking the world's most wanted terrorist, responsible for thousands of American lives? New York Times should be ashamed of endangering future intelligence missions. There should be a law against such disclosures, which cannot and must not be justified as free speech. If I am not mistaken, Washington Post had similarly exposed the fact that CIA had used a safe house in Abbotabad to watch Osama's hideout. All such disclosures are tantamount of endangering national security, lives of our agents and more importantly responsible for the terror sponsoring Pakistan in expelling our agents, thus weakening our ability to thwart future terror attacks and locating terrorists. Shame on the media to do whatever it takes to sell their newspapers, shows etc.
I guess CIA methods are way too advanced that these clown journalists can't even dream of. Let them find existing methods, CIA has many tricks!
Hey Idiot, they put that out because the Pakistanis had already found out about it and arrested the nurses and doctor Involved.
So it would have come out regardless.
Well said Deepak....proud of you
The only problem with the ruse is that the newspapaer blabbed the details; that is what is causing potential harm to medical professionals. Shut your mouths and all is fine.
Let's just keep everything from everyone... why stop here. Sounds like moral corruption to me.
Why the hell do we have to justify any of this?
LOL you sneaky DOGS you!!!!
Karunakara sounds Indian name. What he cares about Pakistanis. Either he is too nice of an Indian or CIA himself!
We got him who cares. The newspapers need to stop leaking cia stratiges. Plain and simple
Hi. Things that make you say hmmmmm.
T
The only reason this isn't a war crime is that the U.S. is accountable to no one.
Really? a war crime?
So, they can blow up whomever they want, but those being attacked can't vaccinate them and collect DNA to catch the terrorists? Pakistan is getting a great deal....lots of U.S. money and vaccinations.
Wonderful. Now more aid or health workers will be killed because they're suspected as been spies.
Not that anyone asked, but here is my take (I am sure someone will agree with me):
1) Terrorists don't play by the rules and don't make or need excuses to behead people. They use deception as well.
2) Pakistan was obviously either harboring Bin Laden OR is the most incompetent nation on the planet. Either way – he was there 5 years and Pakistan failed to deliver.
3) The biggest problem here is that the ruse part was made public. No one would've put two and two together to figure out that the vaccinations were part of a bigger CIA picture. It would be a non-issue if this info was never published.
4) People were still helped here. The vaccinations were legit – it was the DNA collection that wasn't ethical.
5) I have no issues with taking down *any* leader of any terrorist organization *especially* those that target the US.
An how do you know that, many countries in South America are suing our government for Vaccinations to their citizens, most of which were purposely infected with other diseases for experiment, did u know that, IDIOT.
BruDog, How is it that a bunch of guys living in a cave with a budget of $500,000 were able to outsmart the biggest defense machine with the biggest defense budget in the world? I wish people would take a look back 10 years and use some critical thinking skills. If Bin Laden was responsible for 9/11 he would have been broadcasting that all over the place!! He said he was glad it happened but that he had nothing to do with it. So who did?
can someone slap @cathy with some common sense terrorist dont care who they kill as long as they kill what an under statement. They target specific people westernized for now. Yes (terrorist) planned the world trade center attacks they didn't just start flying around on Sept 11 and said oh lookie over there a big shinny building. Speak before you or Savannah get stupid juice all over the place.
Who is the US government think it,s fooling, ever since i was a KID,I always heard stories how in almost all 3rd world countries that I traveled in use to be aware that So call Missionaries Christians were all American SPIES and they were all correct in their assumptions, whether in South America or Africa,I can guarantee you that most RED cross members and other Non profit organizations members are Spies as well.
Just like everyone knows all muslims are terrorists, and all Pakistanis are Taliban.
Your comments are beyond stupid and inflammatory.
"Dr. Unni Karunakara, the group’s president, said, “The risk is that vulnerable communities—anywhere—needing access to essential health services will understandably question the true motivation of medical workers and humanitarian aid."
Ok, sure – then those people will have to decide which is more important to them – protecting a murdering terrorist SOB or getting vaccinated to protect their health. I have no problem with them facing such a choice.
The proof of Bin Ladens death is missing just like the plane that hit building seven and just like the surveillance footage from the pentagon attack. No one ever accused the CIA of being stupid.
Tin foil must be cheap in your neighborhood.
Doubter – Agreed. Some people around here need to try critical thinking skills.
OK its called the Central Intelligence Agency. They gather all or most of there information from the local population or from operations like they did with the doctors. And CIA agents will go in as doctors, relief workers, shop owners....ect. ect. in order to get close to the local population and recruit persons from the area. This type of tactic has been used since there have been spies.
.....sigh.... these comments are so depressing to read. I realize the majority of folks who are justifying the CIA's tactic do not understand the implications for global health. I encourage you, if you have the time, to read about polio eradication - the amazing progress in eradicating it in the past few decades, and the implications if we fail in covering this last mile of permanently wiping polio off the face of the earth. I know you are all proud that we tracked OBL down to his hideout and killed him, but the price we may pay in the long-run for this tactic may very well come back to haunt us. I'm not sure if any of you are old enough to remember the scourge of polio in the US - but I can promise you that one man's life (no matter how much you hate him) is not worth the risk of letting polio re-emerge.
I believe that Hitler had similar programs.
Ironmike – Yep, the Reichstag fire for one and also the US during the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
The CIA, NSA, FBI, SWAT and any other department with acronyns are able to perform their duties with imputy. We, the people, Congress, gave those organizations that power. There are numerous acts, The Patriot being one of them, that was enacted as a knee reflex response to 911. We gave these people the power to look at our population and foreing countries with blinders. They are not interested in the harn they cause us in the future, they want results now. So, I am not surprised that the CIA's tactics to use a vaccination ruse will certainly create an aura of distrust when legitimate health workers knock on their doors. I am just sorry that I lived to see America become a fascist nation.
The US can justify anything, invading iraq was justified, invading afghanistan and staying there for over ten years is justified, bombing civilians all around the world is justified, spreding the hate messages in the media is justified, so where is the news CNN, what is new in your article!!!!
Good job CIA. I hope whatever intelligence you gained from this project will assist with locating any other of the American hating terrorist and dropping a missile on them. Send them to God in pieces and let him decide if he wants to put them back together again.
Dan, he must have been a really good guy because we surrounded him on 3 sides in the mountains of Tora Bora and left the Pakistan border open for him and his entourage. He was wanted by the FBI for the bombing of the USS Cole, yet he was accompanied by the FBI in July of 2001 when he went for kidney dialysis and they allowed him to walk then. Didn't you know he was on the CIA payroll during the Russian/Afghan war? We gave him and Al Quaeda weapons, cash, and what ever else they needed to fight the Russians because he was "such a good guy"!
Anyone that criticizes this move is only doing so because they are ticked they didn't think of it first so they could ask the question quoted - "Why didn' they use every possible means to find Bin Laden?"
I won't criticize this move, but I absolutely criticize hiding the body, trotting out an obviously photo-shopped image, etc., etc.
No Body

Doctors without borders has a legitemate complaint. This organization does more to produce peace than most other organizations. Though I am all for us getting Bin Ladin, I feel that medical groups that go around the world helping people now will have to work harder to prove their sincerity. Secondly to the other guy who complained that we dumped the body, if we hadn't got Bin Ladin do you really think Al Qaeda really would let the world thing we had?
Kill 'em all, and let Allah sort 'em out.
Oh never mind.
Bill Gates lectured that he can reduce world population by immunization. They want to reduce 95% of whole population. Immunization has so much poisons. Once the vaccine dropped, hazmat team has to be called. The preservative is made by marcury, nerve poison. No wonder there are so many autistic kids.
Doctors Without Borders, one of the true good organizations, has a legitemate gripe with the CIA operation.
Personally, whoever leaked the information should be charged with treason, and the WHO should sue the CIA.
This is the kind of BS that we hope is not going on. It's a good thing that vaccination is de-centralized in the US, and frankly if I was in an urban environment, I'd steer clear of vaccination drives.
Bryan , we tried to stay out of world affairs last century, and twice got dragged into world wars, non involvement doesn't work and with weapons of mass murder, biological really scares me, its best to be proactive.
Are they sure this wasn't something similar to the tuskegee experiments?
The extrapolation is that sure, they can target healthcare workers, then no free healthcare, those that they "govern" get sick of those in power who prevent them from recieving healthcare. It is self-defeating to target healthcare workers and doctors. Unless the Taliban can come up with infrastructure out of thin air then the only way they can provide for their people are by the standards that were in existance thousands of years ago. Go ahead and shoot yourselves in the foot Taliban, Pakistan and all of you other crazy bassards.
Okay, what organizations are going to hold it against medical workers in the world? Hmmmm, seems to me the only ones in the world are these crazy rag heads. Shouting "Allou AHKBAR!" as they are sawing off some poor fool's head. "search 6 Russian conscripts" for video, warning, not for weak stomachs.
I could read a book about this without finding such real-world aparpoches!
