Groups help keep triathlete mom motivated

Kas Seerla is a member of the 2011 CNN Fit Nation Challenge.  She lives in Chicago with her husband and two young daughters, and is using this challenge to show other moms that it's OK to step out of their comfort zones!

What motivates me to workout six times a week? Well, I'd like to say that it's all internal and I wake up everyday raring to go.

These past two months, I've finally realized and come to terms with the fact that I cannot work out alone.

I used to get a weekly workout email and I would take it to the gym with the best of intentions. Usually by the end I would feel totally miserable because it was boring, and I never felt that I was improving.

What has worked for me is to find a group that shares my goals and a coach who is present and gives specific and constructive advice to get you over your low points.

It also helps when you have a partner in the group who has the same pace or slightly better than you, whom you can connect with.

I feel that a welcoming group, a supportive coach and a friend/partner within the group is what motivates me to show up and give a 110%.

    Hi- I just ran into this post, thank you so much! I'm trying to train for a Triathalon in July, but have been having a hard time training. It is true, I need to find people to train with, although I know people who work out, I haven't been making an effort to work out with them, but from now on I will! I am also a Mother, of two little boys, and finding time to work out (and energy after working all week) is very very hard. But if I have friends to work out with, it will be some Me time that i can enjoy 🙂 Thank you for your post!!
