HIV transmitted in donor kidney; screening changes urged

Routine lab screening of organ donors for human immunodeficiency virus, introduced in 1985, has made transmission of HIV through organ donation rare in the United States.

So it was surprising when the New York City Department of Health reported a potential kidney transplant-related case of HIV, even though the living donor had been monitored. By looking at the circumstances behind the 2010 New York case, investigators found there were better ways to screen living donors. Researchers noted that in order to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV through living donor organ transplantation, transplant centers should screen these living donors for HIV as close to the time of surgery as possible, using sensitive tests for both chronic and acute infections.

Adults now 'huffing' more than kids

It’s called huffing – inhaling chemical vapors to get high. It's usually associated with teenage drug abuse, but a new report suggests that's not really the case.  The majority of Americans abusing inhalants are not children but adults, according to a study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

More than 1 million adults were “huffing” last year, according to SAMHSA’s newly released “Data Spotlight Study,”  based on data from treatment facilities across the country.

That’s more than those who used crack or LSD, Heroin or PCP.   In fact, the study found 54% of all people who sought treatment in 2008 were adults over age 18.

Sex: Why slower (and older) may be better

Recently, my very own mother discovered romance anew and is having what can only be described as a love affair.

Her last boyfriend passed away a couple of years ago, so I’m happy for her in all her giddiness. And while nobody likes to think about their parents having sex, I can’t help but wonder if her sex life is now better than mine.

As a busy dad of two young sons, I have to admit that it’s hard to keep sex high on the list of priorities: My wife and I will often opt to hit the hay rather than tumble in it.
