Mexican-American strokes predicted to skyrocket by 2050

Strokes are expected increase sharply among Mexican-Americans –350% over the next 40 years. The findings were presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles.

Using recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Census, University of Michigan researchers considered the current trends to help calculate the potential burden of stroke by 2050.

They predict strokes among Mexican-Americans will rise from about 26,000 in 2010 to more than 120,000 in 2050. Among non-Hispanic whites, the researchers predict that strokes will rise from about 300,000 in 2010 to more than half a million in 2050 – about a 75% increase.

The findings are an important because “the tremendous number of strokes projected has large personal, social and economic consequences for the United States,” according to Shawnita Sealy-Jefferson, MPH, of the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.

The CDC estimates that in 2010 heart disease and stroke in the United States cost more than $503 billion in health care and lost productivity from deaths and disability. That economic burden will skyrocket if the study’s projections are accurate. Study co-author Lynda D. Lisabeth notes, “Efforts to prevent stroke and reduce stroke-related disability in both Mexican-Americans and non-Hispanic whites are critical. Lifestyle changes can reduce one’s risk for stroke.” Lifestyle risk factors that can be changed include managing weight with diet and exercise, not smoking, and avoiding excess alcohol consumption.

Yes, the spaniards (from Spain) had children with the native women of Mexico. These children were then called "mestizos" later labeled as mexicans. Mexico was also conquered by the French. Just like the USA was invaded by the British, French and Spain. The only pure race were the natives of America also called "indians" by error. One can always argue the facts as commonly done. Basic World History 101.

Sweet reminds me of something my favorite writer said: The internet has given every foolish coward a voice

Lets do some fact checking for my racist countryman here.

-90% of govt aid isn't available to illegals because of their status an invalid SSNs.

-I've worked in government and the biggest leeches statistically are poor rural people in the south.

-The majority of people on welfare are "real" white Americans.

Thank you and good night you ignorant racist.

    • Gadsden

Let's base our facts in reality. 100% of welfare, medicaid, and free taxpayer funded education ARE available to children of illegals and subsequently their families because of the current interpretation of the 14th amendment which regards children of illegals as citizens. Illegals are by and large low skill, low wage earners who have expenses that far outweigh their contribution to society. I would also like to know what race is illegal, when you call people racist. Illegals come from all races you bigot. Illegal is a choice, not a race.

Of course...in California none of your statistcs hold up...but NATIONWIDE you are correct. In California 80% of government aid IS available to illegals. Oh...and when we say ILLEGALS we are not saying MEXICAN. This is something the liberal and conservative has to get out of their heads. ILLEGALS come from everywhere.

While reading the article, I knew there would be a bunch of racist comments before reading them, and I was right. It's sad how so many people criticize immigrants, but their own ancestors were immigrants. If someone moves somewhere illegally, it is immoral and and is illegal, but they are all just trying to create a better life for themselves and their families, as we all want to do. And most are good hard-working people, so keep that in mind.

I'm not too pleased with this article, because the risks of stroke and heart diseases are skyrocketing amongst ALL people, especially younger people, and this article makes it sound like it's only projected to rise so much for one group. It's projected to rise enormously for all groups.

I see this all the time at my hospital ER. Americans would be shocked at how they are bankrupted and illegals walk away scott free. It is a national disgrace.
Cow: stop comparing them to the others who came here and actually contributed something unlike mexicans who only add to the destruction of this country. Don't care if you're not pleased with the article, no one is here to please you.

It is truly amazing that people can't distinguish between Americans of Mexican descent and illegal immigrants. Just don't expect any understanding back if the situation was to be reversed for any reason. (like demographics change for instance).

Are they mexicans or americans!! Lets drop the hyphenated names. I'm not a german-american, I'm an AMERICAN!! Being an American doesn't mean you're white, it means you're a legal citizen of this country. If you say you're a mexican-american, then maybe you'd better make a choice on which country you belong to, and go or stay in that country, you can't swear allegiance to both.

You would be correct on the country thing if America where a country and not a continent, in any case, there's not such thing as a german-european.

@ Americans, it does if one hews to the utterly ridiculous political correctness of the day. Europe is considered one of the 7 continents. If such a thing as African-American (US citizen w/ African roots) can exist, so can European-German.

I live in south Texas and I see very few fit and healthy Mexicans, Latinos, Hispanics, etc. We were all raised on food way to high in fat and carbs. The only vegetables that are common in the diet is avocado (which is really a fruit) lettuce, tomatoes and onion. It's a cultural thing, and an economic thing. Until those two things change (which I doubt), the health issues won't either.

I see a lot of dead people. America loves to eat chemicals. Why bother cooking a healty meal when we can just throw a frozen dinner, zap it and stuff ourselves with sodium, sugar, preservatives and other crap that would make a maggot puke. It's our way of life. Lucky if we live to see our 40th birthday. Best of luck to all of us.

Strokes affect everyone because of the foods we eat and the lack of exercise. Eat right and lead a healthy life style will decrease health problems. Look at Jack Lalane. Just because you are Mexican-American does not increase your propensity for stroke. By the way, I am an American first with a Mexican heritage. Born and raised in the US of A. Served my country proudly in the military for 22 years and was discriminated against in OTHER countries for being American, and discriminated against in this country for being Mexican. Go figure. I work hard, have a good family and contribute to my community.

The very fact that an article about health is twisted into a discussison about race is de facto evidence of racism! Grow up!

The real problem the discussion is ignoring is that we are becoming a nation of fat and obese individuals that negatively impacts our healthcare system: mainly a pandemic of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. I see youngsters of all ethnic groups eating junk food 'all the time' . . . even in classrooms and not exercising enough. We can affect our citizen's health if we promote and choose healthy lifestyles!

I noticed racist comments about illegals. If this is true why corporations hired them? Another fact 9% are Mexican in the USA today and in Mexico 2% are American. By 2025 10% will be American in Mexico. More Americans come to Mexico now to settle. Why more Americans come to Mexico to settle, when crime is so high? Why the US economy is bad when immigrants are leaving? US should be recovered from the crisis with less immigrants. If US is so educated why cheap comments are written?
