CDC: Vaccination rates in toddlers remains high

Vaccination rates in young children remain high, according to a CDC report released Thursday.

"Nearly all parents are choosing to have their children protected against dangerous childhood diseases through vaccination," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Director of the National Center for Immunication and Respiratory Diseases at CDC.

According to the National Immunization Survey (NIS), more than 90 percent of children aged 19 to 35 months are getting all of the appropriate vaccinations. "Fewer than 1 percent of young children got no vaccines at all," Schuchat said.

Vaccinations rates for polio, the measles-mumps-rubella, hepatitis B and chickenpox remain above 90 percent, but a shortage of Hib vaccine contributed to a drop in children receiving this type vaccination.

In recent years, concerns about vaccine safety among children and the link between vaccines and autism have been debunked, but Schuchat says the CDC is aware that concerns still exist.

"While it's encouraging to see immunization rates remaining high, we know that parents have questions about vaccines and we must continue to educate parents about the importance of vaccination to help avoid future resurgences in serious, preventable illnesses," Schuchat said.

Not getting my daughter vaccinated has been a very difficult choice to make and it's certainly not a choice you can get a lot of support with. With all the recalls and problems with RX companies it has made my choice easier. One of my biggest problems is you can't pick and choose which ones you may feel comfortable with. If you want to put your child in school it's all or nothing. Although logic does tell me that injecting little bodies with so many different chemicals just isn't good. It's more of the additives that is an issue. And no I do not trust the pharmaceutical companies or the federal government with my daughters well being, they have an agenda and it's not necessarily in the best interest of my daughter.

Here is yet another myth that needs debunking: Pharmaceutical companies do not make alot ofmoney on vaccines. Think about this: a person needs 3 Hep shots for their entire life. At $50 a pop, Merck made a whopping $150 off that product for that person's lifetime. Now imagine that same person is diagnosed with high cholesterol at age 50. Now they are on some statin twice a day for 20 to 30 years.! That's where the companies make their money. It's on lifestyle drugs. Vaccine production is the last altruistic venue that these companies still have. . Check out how many companies make flu vaccine...only a handful because it's not profitable and rife with problems from idiots. Get you facts straight.

Do you realized that RX companies can't be sued for a vaccine related side effects. That they have an agreement with the federal government to put a certain amount of money into the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program 1-800-338-2382 so.... why would they need to create something like that?

@ Fred and Dana- are you really calling parents of vaccine injured children idiots? And you expect anyone to listen to you. Of course they won't, people read the facts and science posted by us "idiots", and instead of you reading about it and having an educated adult debate, you call us idiots.

No wonder why parents refuse to listen to you anymore, and our vaccination rates are dropping. You my friends, are responsible for the upcoming vaccination failure we will experience. Sadly, most of the medical community terms us "idiots" and refuse to look at science- as you both are now.

Dana- you need read about the iout the NVICP? Inception of the NVICP, and it's history. They tax vaccines to pay the Injury Compensation fund because we are "idiots"? That's an intelligent statement. Have you ever read about the NVICP? Isuggest you do http://www.hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/

Do you realize that since the inception of the NVICP- which removes ALL liability from vaccine manufacturers, the number of recommended pediatric vaccines has increased from 23 vaccines in 1989 to over 60 today? This info can be found at cdc.gov

Perhaps you should read about Paul Offit, who holds the patent to Rotovax, and while serving on the ACIP (advisory committee on immunization practices, a branch of the CDC) he placed his vaccine (which has made him millions- personally) on the schedule. This is a dangerous 5 live virus vaccine, given to infants in three doses.

The former head of the CDC- Gerberding- now is president of Merck's vaccine division. Yes Merck, the same company who brought us Vioxx, Gardasil, MMR, Proquad, Varivax and Offit's own Rotateq.

Im not against immunizations but I work in a large hospital-clinic and I know that we have had instances of immunizations not crossing over into our charting system and babies and toddlers receiving the same injections more than once. Parents need to keep track of what their child is getting and when.

Absolutely! Where I am, I am very lucky, we have a small health clinic that does nothing but vaccinations and goes over all the records with you in great detail along with the info on the vaccines before they proceed. That is a scary thought, and more people should be aware that it is a possibility.

Okay, here's the hilarious part. Parents are vehemently protesting the government even *suggesting* that vaccinations be required. How dare the government infringe upon our rights to raise our children as we see fit? If I choose to keep my child unvaccinated, then that is my business!

Now, over on the "NY wants to ban smoking in public places" area, people are demanding that the government ban tobacco and smoking because it aggravates their allergies/asthma and exposes people to secondhand smoke. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? I can't/shouldn't smoke around kids because of their "delicate" conditions, but you can voluntarily choose to have your kid remain a potential walking disease time bomb? Have you read the statistics from other nations where vaccinating is not required/available? Serious outbreaks of polio, measles, diptheria, pertussis, and other preventable diseases decimate populations, leaving countless people without family or friends. The reason we *don't* have these epidemics here is *because* we vaccinate.

And, if mercury and vaccinations are responsible for autism, why is it that autism has only gained prevalence within the past decade or so? Why is there no mention of any autism cases from 50 or 100 years ago, when mercury WAS in the vaccination and we got tons of shots at once? Hmmmm, that kind of makes me wonder...

Not everyone feels it's the mercury from vaccines, but the viruses, bacterias and antigens themselves. I dare you to find your vaccination schedule where you received tons of shots at once. You won't. In 1989, there were 23 mandated pediatric vaccines, today- over 60!

The reason there are outbreaks of disease in other countries is because of their lack of clean food and water and have very little sanitation if at all. In 1975 Germany stopped requiring pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination. Today less than 10 % of German children are vaccinated against pertussis. The number of cases of pertussis has steadily decreased even though far fewer children are receiving pertussis vaccine. In 1986 there were 1300 cases of pertussis in Kansas and 90 % of these cases occurred in children who had been adequately vaccinated. Similar vaccine failures have been reported from Nova Scotia where pertussis continues to be occurring despite universal vaccination. Pertussis remains endemic[4] in the Netherlands where for more than 20 years 96 % of children have received 3 pertussis shots by age 12 months. Dr. W. Torch was able to document 12 deaths in infants which appeared within 3½ and 19 hours of a DPT immunization. He later reported 11 new cases of SIDS death and one near miss which had occurred within 24 hours of a DPT injection. When he studied 70 cases of SIDS two thirds of these victims[6] had been vaccinated from one half day to 3 weeks prior to their deaths. None of these deaths was attributed to vaccines. Vaccines are a sacred cow and nothing against them appears in the mass media because they are so profitable to pharmaceutical firms.
I am not sure exactly what Autism is caused from could be many things including something in vaccines but it's not just a coincidence, that Aurism rates have increaed as we have increased vaccinations. In last 25 years we went from 10 required vaccinations to now 36. Austims rates were 1 in every 151, now they are 1 in 91.

This is a wonderful example of quoting stats and trying to make it sound impressive. There is no doubt that sanitation and clean water help lower the rate of infectious disease. However, there is also no doublt that there are fewer deaths to children from vaccines. The number of cases of Hib memingitis I've seen in 10 years is 1. And that was an unimmunized child. This was due to the introduction of the Hib vaccine in the 1990s. Prior to that Hib meningitis and epiglottitis were rampant. There have not been alot of sanitation advances in the past 20 years to accoun for this dramatic result. Rotateq was introduced 2-3 years ago and admissions for rotavirus diarrhea are down 80 – 90 %. No vaccine works 100%. They are designed to hopefully prvent disease or at least mitigate it. It's not perfect but far better than nothing. As for the money that pharmaceuticals make from vaccines, read my earlier post where I school you morons who don't have a clue about immunology, vaccines, or infectious disease.

No matter what stats you use, correct or incorrect...Fred knows more....They will all say its just "coincidence" that autism rates have steadily climbed right along with the number of vaccines. They will also dispute the overwhelming evidence that unvaccinated children almost never have autism. And yes Fred, this was an actual study. Look it up Dr. Edward P. Wright

@IMD14: I'm sure no one in your family will tell you, so I will: you're an idiot. Autism rates AREN'T climbing; what is climbing is the number of cases of autism being identified. More awareness leads to more diagnoses. Duh. It isn't rocket science, dear.

lmd...the use of ultrasounds during pregnancy has been going up, as has the use of microwaves, cell phones, laptops, blue cars and pink pens. Perhaps they are to blame for the rise in autism rates. Had you studied science properly, you would realize how irrational and illogical your statements are. People like you on the fringes of medicine do a great disservice to the unfortunate people that have to see you for their care. Perhaps you should stick to nursing duties and leave the medicine to the grown ups.

I seriously love the folks who say they don't want vaccines because they don't want to put anything "unnatural" in their body. Please don't come to my office then begging for antibiotics for a cold, medication for your heart disease, or chemo for your cancer.

Oh and for those of you confusing encephalitis and autism, ecephalitis is an infectious inflammation of the brain. It can be cause by many things, viruses, bacteria, fungus. They are in no way the same thing.

Get a clue LB, it's not just putting something unnatural in your body, it's poison. Aluminum, is a known neurotoxin. Formaldehyde – classified by the EPA as a probable carcinogen, is used as a tissue fixative in some vaccines. Ethanol – can affect the function of the brain and nervous system, and is commonly used as a preservative in vaccines. Phenol – a highly poisonous, caustic substance derived from coal tar and used in the production of disinfectants, dyes, pharmaceuticals, plastics, germicides, and preservatives. Go paint the inside of your house with lead then

Aluminum is in some backing powders–so beware backed goods.
Formaldehyde is often a by product of burning wood–so beware camp fires.
Ethanol, well that's beer, liquor and wine–so hope you're a teetotaler.
Phenol is used in cosmetics and sunscreens–so skip the beauty counter.

Poison is all about dosage. The levels of those four chemicals in vaccines are not high enough to have a toxic effect. And we aren't continuously receiving vaccinations, so they won't lead to chronic toxicity.

And really most medications have a "poisonous" aspect to them–especially chemotherapy. So unless you're willing to forgo all drugs, your vaccine stance seems a bit wobbly.

I had a long career, experienced joy and sadness, and saw many good and bad changes in medicine.

I had all the vaccinations(thermosal was in it back then) my wife , my 3 great kids and in fact our whole large family has had all the recommended vaccinations and boosters without incident.

When people talk and bash vaccines can they tell me which one? Was is it the 3in 1 (measles.mumps, pertussis) which I think they are talking about. Was it the small pox which I agree is a nasty procedure but so is small pox.The small pox vaccine was stopped around 1965 but I still have my tattoo...They just started the small pox vaccine again because of the wars. Each vaccine is different and is created for a specific disease and it may be a live, dead or attenuated vaccine. Vaccines are safe and the benefits outweigh the risk.

Big Pharma-I agree big pharma is a problem but not with the vaccines. But I would like people to tell me which Big Pharma Company they are talking about. The problems started in the 80's when the pharmaceutical companies began to switch from research and development to the almighty dollar.I have seen good pharma companies go bad because of their leadership it is happening right now with a company that begins with G and ends with tech.....Then in the mid to late 90's it exploded..Pharma companies were MOSTLY about the dollar to buy each other(take a look at all the drug mergers), buy power and buy advertisement(which I think was a FTC mistake) Pharmaceutical Companies in 1997 was allowed to advertise their product on television, print and radio.I don't blame the advertising companies for making clever ads I blame the pharmaceutical companies. The advertising costs plus free market helped drug costs soar.
Also in the early 90's a new approach was taken by some pharmaceutical companies "keep the patents" and buy generic companies. I remember it started with Cardizem. When cardizem (Wyeth then)was going off patent(brand as opposed to generic) they came out with cadizem sr and cardizem cd to keep the patent a few years longer.I was baffled by this because I thought we were going to be getting a cheaper alternative but this practice of extending patents is alive and well today along with some more unethical practices that don't benefit the patient.I can go on and on with similar stories but I believe there are still some good pharmaceutical companies out there and some of the best advancements in medicine have been in the VACCINE product and research. One of the posters is correct in saying that Pharmaceutical companies do not make a big profit on vaccines I think some business men of pharmaceutical companies would rather have the patient get the disease. In fact one vaccine is made just so it is available just in case and the pharamaceutical is given a tax write-off because they lose money.
There are some good and bad posts above me and some are just plan lies. One mentions a bunch of chemicals that are what they say they are but they are not in or have anything to do with vaccines.Formaldehyde really?? Which vaccine? Most vaccines are subcutaneously which means it is not a direct line into your bloodstream.I honestly don't know what other people are thinking and where they are trying to direct you to for healthcare but I willing to bet it involves money. The sad thing is when any company in any industry (look at oil)has so much money and power they begin to lose touch or care about the little people.A pharmaceutical company paid a 860 million fine just to keep their medication on the market but we wanted them to reformulate it and it finally is going to be after a deacde. It is now well known today and called oxy.....something......yes...860 million dollars because their medication will make that money up in no time and it cures nothing.....

FDA,CDC,Doctors are all human which means they can make mistakes and they actually have petty squabbles just like the rest of us.CDC has been one of the best government organizations out there.FDA has been influenced by the pharmaceutical industry but board members change for good and bad it depends on the year and the member. There are bad doctors out there also one is Michael Jackson's doctor and he should never be allowed near a patient again..

Find a doctor you trust and it may take some time , check his or her credentials with the board of medicine and make sure they are a M.D. or a D.O.Be a pro-active patient and keep good health care records. The fact that people believe some one who was selling used cars a few years before for their medical info floors me.These used car salesmen have nothing to lose(career and license) if they are proved wrong a few years down the rode or even worse if there is a death.A wronged patient cannot sue for malpractice if the person is not a licensed physician or healthcare provider.A real doctor has their career, their reputation, their livelihood and more importantly their patients when making decisions in their practice that includes the medications.Look the doctor right in the eyes and ask "is this safe for my child?"

The truth is we do not know what causes autism(I have a theory) and there are different types of autism also.We also don't know what causes schizophrenia in seemingly normal males(mostly) until their early twenties so according to some people we should not treat that also. The bottom line is listen to your doctor and ask questions or find another doctor just make sure of their credentials. Health is very very important not only for longevity but also for quality of life and now financial health too.

Also even though I am retired my colleagues and I tried to write some ideas for the new healthcare reform that were looking out for the patient and all were rejected..I do miss many of my patients....

Live happy and healthy......................................and you will live well

Not sure why you are implying that I think doctors and pharmacies are out to get me. They have been essential in my child's health. By the time you obtain your MD you may better understand pharma's influence on medicine- they likely will fund the school of your specialty.

You and your cousins were likely vaccinated with a third of what my daughter received. In 89, there were 23 mandated pediatric vaccines, today there are over 60. You can find the schedules on the CDC's website.

I implore you to read my comments, the links provided (from all medical and govt sites) and become an educated doctor. We need more that are open minded. Perhaps you can pioneer autism research and treatment by attending UC Davis's Mind Institue.

THe best way to promote autism research and thereby identify its cause is to stop the dead horse beating of vaccines as possible culprits. You are holding up the process, Monica, by continuing down a dead-end path.

Dana, I am promoting autism research, by linking to papers regarding the immune system and it's relation to autism.

Why do you think I should deny the truth of what happened to my daughter? Should she not be compensated for the
documented encephalitis she suffered, as a direct result of her vaccines, as documented by her physicians?

Could you tell me, how am I holding up the process? My daughter is RECOVERING because we treated her underlying immune deficiency. It would be morally sinful of me to not share the information we have found to put my daughter's puzzle together.

And yet, oh brilliant Monica, you can't figure out how to correctly use apostrophes. Sorry, but you're not that intelligent or knowledgeable about medicine, and I agree that your fear-mongering is detrimental to public health.

1 in about 100 children. boys hit harder at a scale of 1 in 60. If it were a flu – it would be an epidemic- flocks would be eliminated to reduce the spread. If these numbers are anywhere near accurate why would anyone find fault with the parents for trying their best to protect their children. I don't stand on a soapbox for either side, but genetics is NOT the only problem. Something environmental is playing a strong role. Take out the environmental factors and watch the numbers change. I haven't acces to all medical journals but I haven't seen the study that disproves the entire series of vaccines as being a large culprit. If I smoke a pack a day for a year, the end results might be different from smoking 5 packs a day for a year.

Don't let the crazies and paranoiacs scare you out of doing what's right. Vaccinate your children. Weigh the word of anonymous fearmongers like Monica and brain-dead celebrities like Jenny McCarthy against the advice of those who actually have medical degrees and experience. There should be no doubt whose advice is most reliable.

By the way, a few posts up, Monica says that it's "no wonder our vaccination rates are dropping." Funny thing, Monica, apparently they're not dropping much. See the title of this very article, dear? It's people like you most parents aren't listening to any more.

Although we know males are the weaker sex and that males die faster from every disease thoughout life and the rate for males is even higher for males in the first year of life except for one and that disease kills more infant girls than infant males in the first years of life. It is whooping cough and whooping cough is coming back so we need to make sure our girls are vaccinated against it.

This is just fantastic. Yep, blame vaccinations, because the only thing they're doing is keeping us safe from stuff like small pox and the plague. Nooooooo, it couldn't possibly be the million things that a mother and father have put or had put in their own bodies over the years since their own childhoods. So some of you wanna act like parent of the year with regards to vaccinations, but how many of you are gonna let your kids drink a Coke or Pepsi, or eat a Twinkie or Oreo, with their unpronouncable chemical ingredients, without a single thought of what those chemicals are gonna do to their bodies, or how those chemicals will affect the health of your future grand children? I love watching news reports with a mother of a an autistic child whining about vaccines giving her child autisim, as the child is seen on the side eating Cheez Nips.

Back in 1986 Diabetes Type-2 was predicted to be at 6 million patients in 2010......It is at 24 million patients with an estimated 57 million prediabetic and walking around with the disease(no healthcare) not diagnosis yet. Diabetic-related deaths are at 225,000 and climbing....What is the cause of this 400 % jump in people's pancreas failing to produce little or no insulin and the body to develop insulin resistance ... this is a bigger jump than autism...Can't you see the answer the answer? It was mentioned in the above posts...Something you come into contact everyday.....OPEN YOUR EYES...and EARS

......................Listen to your health care providers...............................They WANT to HELP YOU.......................

The very same vaccines are being used in India(they can't get enough),Costa Rica,Chile,Haiti,Peru and Sri Lanka without any major incidents so I am willing to bet they probably want people in the U.S. to keep rejecting them and just send them to their countries...

The problem here is there has been no large scale study comparing the vaccinatied with the unvaccinated and determine how often autism occurs. Likewise there is no test (to date) to screen children for susceptibility to autism or encephalopathy which can be used to determine if vaccines can trigger injury. One would think these two items would settle the debate once and for all, yet, it is not being done. Let's not ignore that our own government through the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program has assumed a link between vaccines and autism for quite some time now. However, they are careful to keep the game going based on semantics ... "resulted in" autism as opposed to "caused" autism. Our government accepts the terminology of encephalopathy with autistic symptoms but not just autism.

For all of this heated debate, I find it funny that no one has brought up the most interesting aspect of the autism-vaccination debate... which is simply that "autism" as a defined pathology is hardly clear-cut or defined. Debate rages on what autism even is and there is a very large spectrum within which one can define the disease. I find it cute that people with no medical background or education decide to fight the fight without having any clear definitions of what the hell they're even fighting for. Of course, they have made up their minds about what autism is and what the links are between it and vaccinations. Monica is a particularly trying participant because she continues to refer to the retraction of the Wakefield study as being irrelevant because of how he went about doing the study... (which, mind you, was determined to be in fact ABUSIVE to the children enrolled). Multiple studies have been done (and all can be found on Pubmed) that have demonstrated time and again that vaccination has no relation to being a causative factor for autism. The correlation simply is not there. Thousands of children are at risk for developing diseases that have been essentially eradicated from our society. Parents who do not vaccinate are irresponsible, period. I'd post the links to all of the studies that have been done, but meh... it's not going to change someone like Monica's opinion... so, screw it. I will say that there is an echelon of study design that is very important in the medical field. ALL of the articles that Monica found on pubmed were interesting... but none of them were of the cohort variety. If she doesn't know what that means, then she should start watching Fox again.
