1 million pounds of ground beef recalled

Consumers are being warned to check their freezers for recalled beef that may be contaminated with E. coli. The Modesto California-based meat processor Valley Meat Company is voluntarily recalling approximately one million pounds of ground beef.  The beef may contain a rare strain of the bacterium E. coli O157:H7.

The Valley Meat Company says the ground beef patties and bulk products were  produced between October 2nd, 2009 through January 12th, 2010 and were distributed to retail outlets and institutional foodservice providers in California, Texas, Oregon, Arizona and overseas.  A list of retailers has not yet been released, but a complete list of products has been published on the company's website.

So far seven people are believed to have been sickened between February and June according to a USDA press release.  Consumers are urged to throw away any of this beef, if they still have it in their freezers.

E. coli can cause serious illness including death in the most severe cases.  Consumers can avoid getting sick if they properly cook their meat to at least 160° F, which kills the bacteria.

      Angie, Ignore these people - any e.coli on your veggies comes from contaminated animal feces through run-off water. Anyone who keeps up with the news knows that.

      Another reason not to eat nasty pig, cow and chicken that bathe in their own manure for their entire lives. There are so many other options out there, people!!

      Michelle, contamination is different than "spreading." Cows spread e.coli because they are the source. Vegetables are contaminated but ultimately from the source (the cows). You seem smart enough to realize that by not eating meat, Angie is helping to NOT spread e.coli (albeit in a very small way) onto vegetables.

      MsAledella has it right. In every instance where a vegetable has been contaminated with e-coli, it's been due to run-off or other cross contamination from animal waste. E-coli is a byproduct of animal waste and it is impossible for vegetables to be exposed to it absent that.

      A major contributor to to the current resistant strains of E-Coli is feeding the cattle corn. The cow stomach was designed to process grasses, not corn. When fed corn, the acids in their stomach do not properly digest the food and leave bacteria intact which in turn become more resistant.

But the digestive tract of the modern feedlot cow is closer in acidity to our own, and in this new, manmade environment acid-resistant strains of E. coli have developed that can survive our stomach acids — and go on to killl us.       Yep, another example of our country killing us all slowly. A direct result of corn fed cattle in feedlots and it is getting worse each year. Feeding these cattle a natural diet of grass and allowing them to graze could reduce these types of bacteria almost instantly. Grain made of corn (and I'm not talking about edible corn) is so terrible for cattle that they can't remain on this diet for longer than 120 days without being pumped full of antibiotics to reduce the chance of acidosis and death. A natural diet actually helps kill bacteria such as E. coli in cattle. Eat organic grass-fed beef and you won't have to worry about this type of crap and your health will improve.

OdwaIIa apple juice recalled because they picked ground apples mixed with deer droppings! Imagine what we'd be eating if they deregulated like they want?

      Quite honestly when it comes to meat, veggies and fruits...if you're fortunate enough to live near one...it's better to shop at a local Farmer's Market. It's safer and usually cheaper than the poorly handled food that you can purchase at the grocery store.

      But, unfortunately for those who dont live near a farmer's market you're basically stuck eating the sh*t (literally) from the major meat manufacturers. The true proof that there needs to be a change in our food system, besides what's going on in the food people eat, is that even peoples pet food has now become contaminated. How is it that our food has come to such a state that a stray dog could possibly be eating healthier than a domesticated dog?
      It's because we've succumb to 'BIG' business in every aspect of our lives, of course the food industry wont care that people are getting sick and dying from their food cos it's not hurting their bottom line and of course our medical industry isnt going to seriously help push for a change because sick people line their pockets and of course our government isnt going to pass better laws and regulations because campaign dollars are more important than the people who vote for them.

      Most contaminated fruits and veggies are contaminated by the run off from factory farms.. so yes it all comes back to corn fed cows.. if they were set to graze like instead of forced in to dirty lots with machine run corn troughs to fatten them up fast so more $$ can be made we wouldn't have this whole E Coli problem every other month.

      You guys have it right that animals are a reservoir of the toxicgenic strain of E. coli which can then be spread to veggies, It might be slightly beneficial to reduce the agricultural production of livestock food, however it also happens that human spread the dangerous kind of E. coli. Remember years ago, there was trouble from strawberries and blueberries from fecal contamination of the pickers in the fields. Apparently, the employers didn't think it necessary to provide proper bathroom facilities so the human feces were in the fields and on the hands of the pickers. Can't blame meat eaters for that! Additionally, at any place in the long chain of food production in our marvelously industrialized and corporatized system, humans can cause contamination. That can be at serving in a restaurant, at transport on semi-trucks or anywhere in cutting, mixing, packaging, especially when "hands" are involved in the process. Basically, too many cooks spoil the soup, but you'll will NEVER convince Wall Street of that. They make a profit on every step of the process when it's in a factory. 🙂 Not to fuel the immigration frenzie right now, but the disease rate in Mexico is far worse than America, and guess where a lot of this comes from?

They're no cleaner than meat, and without the meat and dairy industries growing all those cows, where would that animal feces come from? Even vegetarians are helping the meat industry they so despise, most of them just don't know it.

      There are vegetable/fruit recalls, but the contamination is typically the result of coming in contact with animal products during processing or packing. Angie is right in that animal products are the ultimate culprit.

      Just FWIW, it's no more true that animals spread E. Coli than that vegetables do. It isn't a virus. It's a flagellate bacterium. E. Coli is a living organism, and it spreads just fine on its own. Even if nobody ate meat, even if nobody used manure as fertilizer, there would still be blooms of E. Coli.

      Could we do better at preventing it? Sure. We could outlaw use of manure as fertilizer, we could require more frequent testing of produce and meats, and we could require cattle be grass fed for at least a couple of weeks prior to slaughter. Note that none of these require eliminating meat from our diets, avoiding beef that isn't grass fed, or anything else approaching that level of impact on the public as a whole. It would, however, cost more, which is why it probably won't be done unless mandated....

      Contamination by direct contact with animal products is not that common. Most vegetables are not processed by the same packing plants that package meats, with the possible exception of vegetables processed by fast food chains. Eliminating the meat packing industry would make little difference, if any, in the amount of E. Coli contamination of fruits and vegetables.

      The majority of E. Coli contamination in vegetables comes from either the use of manure as fertilizer or from contaminated water (usually either runoff from organic farms that use manure as fertilizer or runoff from dairy farms that dispose of their waste improperly). To the extent that reducing the use of these animals as meat might reduce the number of animals out there, eliminating meats would reduce the contamination stats, but that's hardly the most effective way to do so.

      Wow, so much bad information, so many people...
      First, e. coli is a common bacteria that lives in the gut. Yours, mine, Betsie the cow.
      It can contaminate water supplies and vegetables via run-off (such as rain run-off from a field into a well head or crops).
      It can contaminate meat by the meat being exposed to animal excrement. Said excrement can be a result of the slaughter process (ALL mammals void upon death, even aunt Tessie) OR if the intestine is punctured during the preparation of the carcass. There are procedures that help ensure that doesn't happen, but on occasion errors happen. At times the errors are pure accident, others intentional poor practices that eventually catch up to the offending company and they get a HEFTY fine AND legal action from infected people and their families.
      ONE contaminated carcass can infect many tons of ground meat, the nature of large batch processes.

      All food can be contaminated, meat or not. Fruits and veggies get contaminated from the water, the same water that is used at the animal farms run off into the water used for fruits and vegetables. The only way help prevent food contamination is to support Kevin's Law, a law that will allow the USDA more power in preventing contamination, which right now they have no power.

      E. coli does not naturally occur in fruits or vegetables. When these outbreaks occur, it is because the fruits or vegetables have come into contact with animal products (usually fecal run-off from factory farms).

      What about the sewage sludge that is hauled by 18 wheeler to the country and then sprayed all over the grass the cows eat, and we plant corn in?? Try driving by that early in the a.m., will wake u up much better than coffee. What about the water canals in Mexico that they pump water out of to spray the fields of Mexico. I salute you for being open to another way of living, being aware of the environmental hazards that result from factory farming, and for being another soldier in the fight against people who make such annoying and ignorant comments as "if God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them outta meat!" ....       jim – I find it funny that you think I have contempt for people. I have contempt for people who refuse to become aware or educated on important issues. There's a huge difference between people who know the issues, and still choose to eat meat and the people who just simply don't want to learn about it. My boyfriend eats meat. My family eats meat. I love them and don't preach to them about it. But – if they want to know anything about the stuff I've learned from the research I've done, I will tell them. They choose to live the way they want to and I respect that. The people that I've run into that don't have respect are the ones that HATE vegetarians and vegans. I don't dread family dinners because everyone else is eating meat – I dread them because they always feel the need to comment about how I'm not.

      Okay now I have finished reading the rest of the posts and comments in this thread. I was responding in my earlier posts before I read this all, to the sense that meat is to blame entirely for infectious disease, which I don't believe, but there's a caveat here. While I am definitely an omnivore (of the free-range, farmers' market variety), and while I am not going to disclaim my earlier posts, I want to note that I trust and respect the many vegetarian and vegan friends I've made over the years. In fact, I enjoy the skills involved in cooking for them (something not just rice and beans and salad). I hear that a vegetarian is going to be at a potluck, and I think to myself.... FUN. I'll come up with something off the books and intriuging. It's fun. I love my veggies. I trust vegetarians/vegans and carnivores alike. Honest ones, anyway.

      E. coli is a natural inhabitant of our guts. The disease form is something that mainly crops up (pardon the pun) in feedlot animals. Feedlot beef do not by any means get to eat anything close to a natural diet. And yes, I won't eat THAT.

      This particular strain of E.coli comes from contaminated cow manure. It gets onto veggies through water run-off. Nothing to do with bad toilet habits, although you can get sick that way too. Just not this type of E.coli.

      So, hunting is bad? How? It is organic meat that hasn't been shuttled through a feed lot. When you go out and get your own food, be it through gardening or hunting, you are doing something good for the environment. I'm not a vegetarian, but cheers to those of you who are. I dislike when people put hunting down. Apparently they forget that hunting used to be the only way to get food. There wasn't a supermarket on the corner to get packaged meats from. Gardening and gathering was the only way to get fruits and vegetables, too. No supermarket for that.

      And no, it doesn't make me feel like a man to hunt. I'm a woman. It makes me proud that I am able to provide for my family without playing in to corporate america.

    If someone bought meat in October and they still proceed to eat it they kind of deserve to get at least a little sick

      FDA has nothing to do with this. It's all on USDA and their regulations. I should know. I'm a former USDA inspector and have been involved in food safety and quality in the meat industry for most of the past twenty years. Get your regulatory agencies correct if you want your paranoia to be taken seriously.

    I do eat (very little) meat, but I draw the line at ground beef and hot dogs. I've done my research on both and I have WAY more respect for my body that to eat that repulsive mish mash. And guess what, I'm also not about to let the USDA inject me with the plague. How many recalls of ground beef have to occur before better standards are imposed????

      Better standards were imposed in 1995, then again in 1997. As an inspector at the time, I was quite aware of the changes that took place then. Those standards were gutted by the Bush "Administration".

      What the cow eats before slaughter is really not the issue here. The issue is that factory slaughterhouses that grind the meat are too close to the source (intestines and their contents) to ensure no contaminated piece gets ground up. E. Coli doesn't inhabit muscle tissue, but once you grind it up the surface area becomes much greater and the risk of stray E. Coli contaminating the ground beef goes way up.

      You know how to solve this? Buy unground meat, rinse the surface thoroughly, and grind it in your kitchen. Virtually zero chance of E. Colli contamination because there's no intestines sitting around. Back in the day, your local supermarket ground beef that was sold fresh. Factory farming ain't progress.

      You are exactly right buy – its cheaper for "big beef" to take the scraps off the floor, mix it with amonia, mix it back in with the better ground beef pieces and try to kill a little bit of it – then recall when there is a problem – take your chances with corn fed beef of any kind or see what the long term affects of ingesting amonia rinsed parts is. (the alternative is to feed a cow grass for 5 days to clear out the e-coli – but that is too expensive for "big beef". Organic grass fed or free range beef is the only way to go – its more expensive...but so are visits to the emergency room, prescriptions, lost wages, etc. Pay now or pay later – unless you're lucky and never get sick – lotto anyone?

      Meh, I never cook hamburgers more than medium, usually medium rare. I buy grass-fed beef now from a local farming co-op. Of course, even when I bought meat at the supermarket I still had my burgers medium rare. I could have gotten sick I suppose, but I didn't. Same with raw eggs. Have them all the time in one form or another. No illness. I figure there's risk with everything, the risk for food-poisoning is so low it is not worth the sacrifice to my palette. (yes, I have had serious food poisoning before (from a fast-food joint) and it was not fun, but it also did not kill me).

      Donut, that's not a good idea. If it's pink or red, don't eat it, especially hamburger! There are rats and cockroaches in these facilities and sometimes even in the better grocercy stores. The FDA actually allows a certain amount of ecoli contamination in meat. You are taking a really big risk with it.

      Cooking might kill the bacteria but it doesn't get rid of the antibiotics and chemicals. For instance, many men are getting boobs nowadays from all the estrogen they pump into chickens to make the breasts grow bigger. Food chickens are males, if it gives them boobs, you will develop them too if you eat enough of it. It is also making most girls start puberty unnaturally early nowadays, many of them before they even reach 10 !!

    The Ecoli in this instance is a form that originated solely from cows eating corn. They are meant to eat grass but after eating corn as their main food source a new Ecoli strain was found that went from being nonexistant to being added to our food supply. The same E-coli is found in the spinach cases as the manure is used for fertilizing the fields thus creating their E-coli issues. Simple fix, feed cows grass for a very short time before slaughter and the E-coli disappears from their system. But that costs too much so meat is quite often processed with ammonia to kill the bacteria. Yum.

      It doesn't come from the workers, it comes from the conditions the animals are kept in. I am very worried that we might end up with an ecoli superbug from all the antibiotics these animals are pumped full of since they are kept standing and lying in their own poo at the stockyards.

      I agree, read my comment below. I have cut meat in my diet down to once a week and with the savings from not eating it very often purchase it at Whole Foods where it's a bit safer to eat. I still like to eat it once a week for the amino acids that come with meat. I know I could do that with supplements but I'm still not ready to give up summer BBQs!

    I lived in Modesto for a year. The absolute filth these poor agribusiness cattle are forced to live in before they are knocked off is both amazing and absolutely sickening. They stand and lie on several feet of poo piled up and the odor from it would sometimes drift into town. It's also what causes Valley Fever, all the powdered poo floating on the breeze as well as toxic chemicals from crop dusting. I would stay indoors when the air had the poo smell for self protection. That's also why agribusiness meat is loaded with antibiotics. Since the skin is a digestive organ, these same animals are both breathing and digesting poo from having to lie in it. That's why it's best to get organic grass fed beef or free ranging chicken if at all possible, but not everyone can afford it of course.

    Dave, vegatable and fruit have been recalled many times, not just meat. The source of the E. coli bacteria is poop, whether it be from cows, pigs chickens or people. For fruits and vegatables the source is most likely people. (You know the folks who pick the crops –they have to go to the bathroom sometimes.) Be careful.

BTW, interesting NPR article, but hominids didn't start out eating meat; while still mainly vegetarian with tiny brains, they were eating the marrow from scavanged bones. Bone marrow added the protein to diets, not meat.

    Have you ever stopped and thought that animals are filthy because they have been domesticated?? Pigs are actually very clean creatures in their own natural environment. They have become filthy animals because the hands of man. However, regardless of people that eat meat or don't eat meat the process of eating food has and always will be there. Herbivore, Carnivore or Omnivore whatever you claim to be it doesn't matter. Just eat the food and continue living. Sure there are always problems and backlash from the problems.The food we eat gets contaminated probably because most people always use the same knife when preparing a meal. Or, there are people that get all worked up over slaughtering cattle and chickens.

    In closing it doesn't really matter. People will always eat meat and continue to eat meat until there is not more meat around.

    The PROBLEM, people, is that commercial enterprises try to make more money by cutting corners. Crammed animals, poor health, over-use of antibiotics (leading to resistant bacteria) shoddy processing by poorly trained workers who dont care because they arent paid enough for the horrific job they do, and bad fencing/improper water sources make for sick animals, fouled water sources, and contaminated meat and vegetables.
    I must point out that most of the veggie contamination has occurred from wild animals-pigs and deer breaking into poorly or unfenced fields, or from ill field workers who poop where they pick.
    FIND ME A COMPANY THAT USES FAILSAFE TECHNIQUES AND GUARANTEES SAFETY AND I FOR ONE WILL PAY TWICE AS MUCH FOR THE FOOD.

      how about stop buying beef from a company at all?
      Find a local butcher who buys meat from local farms that anyone can visit at any time.

      THAT is how we do it here in England where I live. Our local butcher can tell you the name of the local farm his hand-picked cuts of meat come from, and I've no reason to doubt him since he's also a neighbour we all know. AND the farm is nearby enough we all could visit if we had time or desire to. (we DO visit the farm nearby where we get eggs...and we can see the happy little chicken running about outside).
      We do pay a bit extra for the meat from the butcher; however, we also WALK to the butcher shop so we're not spending all that money on petrol, AND there is just no comparing the taste of meat from our local butcher to that of the plastic wrapped junk at the superstores you have to drive to. Not to mention we have very minimal packaging from the butcher so landfills are less filled.
      We hear that all the superstores opening up in the town nearby will put our butcher (and baker and green grocer) out of business eventually, but we hang on as long as possible.

    This meat was last produced nearly 8 months ago. EIGHT months ? If I HAD bought it, it would either have been used ages ago or it would be a freezer-burned block of garbage by now. And why does it take VMC & the USDA this long to realize there is something wrong ?

      FYI, the last 3/4 meat recalls in my area have been from Whole Foods....they are not infallible by any stretch. You think you are paying a 100% markup, but in the end, you're buying from the same place as Market Basket.

      Very true! If we don't do something about the frightening overpopulation that is still going on we will eventually be reduced to eating each other! Overpopulation is at the root of every single environmental problem we have.

      Burbank, yes we should start with eating the Chinese and Indians. With 2+ billion of them, they should supply the rest of us for some time as women of child-brearing age continue to pump them out in India. With declining populations there, the land will start to recover. Males are in overabundance too so we should start with them. They could be marketed as "meple". The wealthy could buy locally grown meple and so the whole world population might begin to shrink.
