HIV antibody discovery a step toward vaccine
"This is significant because we've now found antibodies that are good templates for HIV vaccine development," explains Peter Kwong, chief of structural biology for the institute, and co-author of the study published Thursday in the journal Science. "You can potentially inactivate the virus," he says. Although previous antibodies were promising, Kwong says, they often posed structural challenges that made them more difficult in terms of vaccine production. The researchers were able to narrow the data to three specific antibodies that are able to bind to a "site of vulnerability" on the HIV-1 strain, and it also helps that these antibodies appear in about 10 percent of all people currently infected with HIV. "With this information we know the human immune system can make the antibodies, and this suggests the capability of the human body to make them in mass." Dr. Anthony Fauci, who heads the NIAID, tells CNN that it’s really rare that someone would get a good immune response against the virus that causes AIDS. Researchers now have found one individual who had such an immune response. “Now that we have those antibodies, we can use them to precisely identify the virus," says Fauci. He adds this is a new concept and “the potential for a vaccine is here.” HIV/AIDS is the world's leading infectious killer, ccording to the World Health Organization. The disease accounted for an estimated 2 million deaths in 2008, and more than 33 million people are living with the disease worldwide. The researchers say the findings put them one step closer to their goal, and among their next steps are plans to make sure other people – not just those infected with HIV – can create these types of antibodies, and figure out how to derive the right inputs to be able to potentially mass produce more "broadly-neutralizing" antibodies to block nearly all HIV strains in the future.

After years of disappointment, researchers have finally found a potential basis for an HIV vaccine. Scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases say they have discovered three human antibodies that neutralize more than 90 percent of the current circulating HIV-1 strains.
that is very good news, hopefully those antibodies will bear fruit to a much needed new vaccine at an affordable cost!
It always seems like 'good news" when researchers announce a possible cure. But sadly, often these announcements are self-serving in order to gain more funding for continued research....and nothing ever comes of them. Look at all the promising vaccines that have come and gone. There is big money to be made in the "sick" industry. "Cure" is a dirty word.

To save millions the agony of a horrific and dehumanizing death. HIV AIDS did not come from "beastiality." Current theories hold that HIV is a strain of Simian Immune Virus. It is hypothesized that humans acquired the virus through the capture of chimps and butchering of the meat, not through beastiality.

Carl, vaccines are given PRIOR to virus exposure so no, a virus can't "react" to a vaccine at all. Hopefully, the vaccine will prompt the person to make antibodies that will react to any virus introduced later. Viruses can and do mutate but the structure found here recognizes 90% of the virus strains currently out there. Because HIV prefers CD4+ T cells to live in, the body doesn't usually made a strong immune response towards its own cells. That will remain a challange. The best strategy remains to teach people not to engage in risky behavior but that is also the most difficult one. Men all over this planet REFUSE to use condoms. Why is that?
Today on CNN there were about four articles on Lindsay Lohan, about five on Lebron James, and one, only one article, less than three hundred words, about a research of antibodies that could possibly help us cure HIV/AIDS. This article doesn't even have enough importance to be a front page headline? Are you guys serious? This is ground breaking information in the field of medicine, pushed under the carpet to make room for celebrity gossip. There must be so much more to this story that CNN is neglecting to share because it might not be popular or entertaining to the public. Please do something about your journalistic integrity for this is a fantastic example of why it is fading to the low standard of Fox. The best and the brightest have failed at making an AIDS vaccine. This news really was no news other than the fact that Fauci has a news team following him around (is that blasphemy?).
The AIDS vaccine effort needs new leadership. This article was another by the old boys who have a ton of money and they have to account for that and unfortunately, the people who provide the money, i.e., Congress, listen to the publicity, without being critical of the work.
When this kind of work actually provides a safe and effective vaccine, I'll be more upbeat. I really do not see it from this work.

If we don't THINK too much, if we don't QUESTION too much and OBEY, life is grand. You have an excellent idea, in theory. However, we have to remember that primary goal of commercial news is not to inform the public, or to further the needs of society. Rather, it is to make money. When people stop caring about Lindsay and Jennifer and Sandra, then all commercial media outlets will have to retool their money-making machines.

Those cures are being found through efficient research that is funded by money, these answers come to us like everything else we have through science that has brought humanity so many benefits. You are giving credit to a God that you can't prove is even real. How selfish you sound giving credit to your own personal god and not the scientists who are actually working to save lives. Probably better then most Drs antibiotics. I love when people promoting herbal supplements criticize pharmaceutical companies for their large profits. Alternative medicine and herbal supplements are big business too. The difference between pharmaceutical drugs and herbal supplements is not that one is for profit and the other charitable. Both are for-profit industries. The difference is that pharmaceutical drugs are ones that have been shown to work, while herbal supplements are things that have not been shown to be effective. There are all sorts of herbal remedies that were demonstrated to work, and are now sold as legitimate medicines. What is left in the herbal realm are the ones that don't seem to work.

Person, I will only comment to say that it is your own immune system that nurtures and spreads cancer and strengthening it while having cancer will simply make the cancer stronger and spread faster. Taking vitamins while having cancer is DUMB. Vitamins are pro-growth. What do tumors do best?- grow. Cyclophosphamide is still one of the best therapies available for cancer and autoimmune diseases because it knocks the immune cells down. Without dendritic cells, macrophages, neutrophills and stromal fibroblasts, your tumor will wither and die. Please don't urge oncology patients to "strengthen their immune system" as that would be folly. As for promoting herbal remedies and reading the Bible, I'll give those the comments they deserve: none.
My aunt got breast cancer and refused medical treatment because she was convinced God and biblical medicine would save her. Over the course of 6 months, her breasts actually turned black because of the cancer....and then she died. I would put my money on modern science over the bible.
Person, i completely agree with you. to those who think modern medicine is better- doctors treat symptoms, not the actual problem, not to mention all the side affects of the medication and worse damage they will cause to you organs later. homeopathic remedies get to the root of the problem to fix it. yes, you may have symptoms for a while but most of the time, our illness are so far imbedded in our bodies, we dont even know we are sick until the symptoms. as far as modern medicine helping us live longer, well maybe some of you need to go back and read Genesis... in the beginning, people live about 900 years. it was after the flood when God gave us the animals that roam the land to eat that brought lifespans down to no more than 200 years. He did this because life is too cruel to live that long. also, God says he will destroy 1/3 of Earth's population with disease. so it is up to us to stay as healthy as we can in order to live as long as we would like to. as far as cancer goes- it is our bodies last attempt to stay alive, believe it or not. thats why the cells reproduce (which is known as cancer). therefore, if all of your organs, tissues, and muscles are working properly, you will not get cancer. i believe in BEA (bioenergetic assessments) because it can test all you organs and brain functions to make sure that they arent "struggling". which if they were, you wouldnt see the symptoms until its almost too late. its when organs are constantly inflammed or in degenerative mode, that we start to develop a cancerous environment. thats the beauty of BEA's. its more of a preventative way of living. just something to think about. vitamins and "holistic medicine" DO work, you just have to know in what fashion they need to be used. God gave us everything we need to survive. therefore, is it too hard to believe that plant extracts etc can actually work? if you really rely strictly on modern medicine, i feel bad for you. you are just harming you body in the long term. it is not my intention to piss anyone off, i would just like for my fellow americans to THINK about what they are putting in their bodies. i hope that this will inspire you to look further into BEA testing and natural medicines along with modern. the two can work together beautifully. im not a doctor promoting BEA testing, but i believe in it b/c it has helped me in everyday problems, such as allergies and digestion (which are directly related) and i have seen it save my one year old nefew's life (he had RSV and BEA testing found that and started seeing results in literally ONE week as opposed to doctors wanting to keep him in the hospital for 2 months with shots and limited visitors.) i hope you all find your true health!

It is in chimps. It doesn't appear as a disease anymore because it has been incorporated into their DNA over thousands of years. It's like being exposed to anything that can change DNA. When you get cut by certain plants you can contract viruses, or antigens that can cause cancer or many other diseases. It is the same with the HIV virus from chimps. There are so many theories out there and most of them are conspiracy theories. Scientifically, it is there.

AIDS has been used as a means to describe the onset of symptoms and signs (that they originallly called a syndrome) and HIV is the nomenclature to describe the virus itself... but never mind that... how exactly can you make the argument that this virus doesn't exist? How can that be? What's the cause of the onset of the symptoms, the immunodeficiency (the syndrome) if people are left untreated?
The ultimate irony here is that the origins of the Polio vaccine brought this "virus" (which has not actually been positively identified as a virus) to humankind in the first place! Just another example of vaccinating against vaccine consequences!
@ kaitka Where exactly did you read this information? What's your source? How do you know HIV is not a virus? How exactly is Polio and its vaccine tied in with the emergance of HIV? You are so right!!! Most people don't realize all hepatitis strains are 100 times more contagious and virulent than HIV. Hepatitis B is actually the big concern as it is the most likely to be passed on as an STD. Hepatitis C while it can be passed on sexually, is much more likely to go through blood exchange. This is a really good point.

First off if this does lead to a cure I will still give God the Credit he deserves. Without God man can do nothing. I give props to the scientist if this is truth. @ Person: You're wrong. At worst, religion, the belief in god, has long proven to be an impediment to scientific progress. The reason is because while science begs to clarify the world through the scientific method, religious types are so bent on trying to convince the world that god exists that they can't see reality looking at them in the face, so they stand in the way of progress and scientific discoveries for the sake of god.

I think this is not on the main page because it is not the cure yet. Also, it will not help 10% of people. Thats still A LOT of people. However, if this works at 90%, the world just got much brighter for many people. Much needed HOPE. AIDS is such an evil painful disease.
My only concern is the drug companies will do something very bad such as play politics, bribery to suppress the vaccine, or issue false misinformation about it. They will lose tens of billions if the AIDS epidemic goes away.

Ever wonder why we hear about new research and possible new treatments and cures for a plethera of diseases yet nothing ever comes of it? I hear the most researchers are working on more tenure with their reseaching and after something like this is found that it goes not further because there are so many different discoveries and funding is not available, so it just sits still for ten years or so and people continue to die.
Only way is through MEDICAL research – all the religion in the world won't cure a disease. We must use SCIENCE.

@ openminded, well science doesn't exactly disprove religion or the existence of god... rather, science does not purport to "prove" or "disprove" the existance of god any more than you can use science to prove or disprove the existance of the toothfairy or the Easter bunny, or Santa Claus for that matter. You can't prove or disprove what doesn't exist in the first place. Rather, what science does is relatively simple: hypothesis, observation, conclusion. That is, make a hypothesis, examine empirical evidence, and form a conclusion that either supports the hypothesis or negates the hypothesis. All science has proven is that the debate over the existance of god is really entirely a philosophical debate rather than a scientific one.

This is not new, the knowledge that natural immunity exists in approximately 10% of the Caucasian postulation (1% being homozygous) has been published for about a decade. However, it is wonderful that these discoveries are finally making it into the mainstream media instead of gathering dust in the scientific journals! CNN, in future, could we attach citations to these referenced articles in order to more easily locate and read the research directly?

Many times more money was spend on AIDS research per person infected than on cancer... because AIDS was politicized by the very vocal Homosexual community. These people not only cultivated a terrible disease because of their gross behavior, but they also spread it to the innocent. Moreover, the antibiotics that they took in mass to fight the opportunistic infections have cultured a new generation of drug-resistant bacteria (i.e., superbugs). Prior to the proliferation of AIDS, infectious disease was all but wiped out and a thing of the past.
This is just one reason why our Founding Fathers considered homosexuality and other sexual sins, as well as drug use, a terrible crime against society and put laws on the books prescribing criminal penalties for offenders. We would have been much better off if we had put every single homosexual and other perverts in isolation camps and just let them reap what they sowed to die of the disease that they brought upon themselves and the world. (We’ve quarantined every other disease.) Then, when they had all died, AIDS would have died with them. It would have saved the innocent untold heartache and the Government tons of funding.

I am so happy with the research and the antibodies they have discovered, I am 24 years of age and I am living with the disease here in the Philippines which HIV/AIDS is not yet that very widely spread. however, i am still hoping that it will save lives it the future. I dont care if I will not benefit it, but i hope the future generation will.
