Spray may treat premature climax

By Elizabeth Landau
CNN.com Health Writer/Producer

It's fitting that "PSD502" sounds like a code name, since it relates to a distressing problem most men would prefer not to talk about: premature ejaculation.

Researchers recently presented findings on PSD502, a topical spray medication, at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting. The spray, made by pharmaceutical company Shionogi Pharma, Inc., is in trials among men who suffer from premature ejaculation.

Participants were selected from 70 centers in the United States, Canada and Europe to use either this spray or a placebo spray. They were told to put the spray on the glans penis - the conical structure at the tip of the penis - five minutes before intercourse. Data came from two studies, each of which had more than 500 men.

Researchers found great improvement, with an average time of 3.3 minutes to penetration and climax among those who used PSD502, representing a 5.5-fold increase over the baseline of 36 seconds. Participants who used the placebo had a 1.6-fold gain in time to ejaculate.

The spray itself does not work magic with new materials; in fact, it is a combination of two drugs currently on the market for pain relief: lidocaine and prilocaine.

The company is in the process of applying for approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and could not yet estimate when the product might be available to consumers.

There is currently no FDA-approved treatment for premature ejaculation.

Between 5 and 30 percent of men experience premature ejaculation, studies have found. Risk factors for premature ejaculation include erectile dysfunction, stress, other health problems and use of certain medications such as psychotropic drugs.

Tracy, the best assistance that can be provided for women's sexual dyfunctions is to provide men with better, more explicit and taboo free sex education.

Wow, 36 secs. And as young men we used to hoot about a "2 minute" man. I guess that would be a drag to go so quick.

Jesse, are you seriously comparing premature ejaculation to breast cancer?

I have to work, fight wars, sift through corrupt government, protect you and pay for everyone on the dole. Show me some awareness, consideration and lighten up and maybe we'll be there for you ... longer.

I think its odd that everyone is talking about numbing the glans of the penis but no one is talking about the real underlying problems that can very easily cause premature ejaculation such as age, sexual experience, intact status, stress, level of closeness with one's partner, psychological and physical health.

I think the whole premature ejaculation directly is related to your partner and how sexually compatible you are together.

I have been with women that made me have orgasms one after another. I also been with women that caused me have premature ejaculation or Erectile Dysfunctions.

My conclusion is the less you care about somebody, the better sex you'll be having. Sex with girlfriends and wives become routine and boring.

Both Barry and Tracy have good comments.

Barry is going in the right direction. I bellieve that premature ejaculation is a social conditioning and myth. We have been told endlessly that the orgasm is the end/goal and once reached we have been taught to just stop and not even try to continue.

If men simply continue on they will find that multiple orgasms are more typical than not.

As Tracy points out there are probably not enough women who are enthused about prolonged sex for all the men taking ED drugs. The whole concept simply plays to men's fantasies.

My problem is latent ejaculation, especially when i'm drunk. As for Tracy's comment, men are having sex with women without sexual problems. It's unfortunate, but the majority of women seem to have some kind of sexual hang up. That's why we stick to the few women who do climax easily.

Premature ejaculation can be controlled, and with practice (and a supportive partner) many men can overcome that problem. But it's all relative. I used to think that reaching climax under 5 minutes WAS premature!?!? But at 36 seconds, why bother having intercourse at all?

    Tracy and Zoe,
Since the female is largely a mental phenomenon, I'd suggest that the women who want help in the sack should look less at science for help and look more at themselves. Get a therapist if you want help. We all know that us men are rather simple, visual and physical creatures in the sex dept, which would explain why science has had more success in dealing with men's issues. You shouldn't try to compare the two. It is what it is.

How was the study conducted? Do they take into account different partners? Is their an observer? Are the females consistant variables? Are the females participants for the experiment as well? I am genuinely interested in these questions, I almost never see it answered in sex studies like these.

There's lots of help available for women with sexual dysfunction. It's called a psychiatrist. A woman can always have sex. The problem is she often doesn't want to. If a man can't get an erection, or ejaculates too fast, then sex is not going to happen. Maybe that's why there are more drugs available for male sexual problems. Men's sex problems are normally physical, women's sex problems are normally psychological. Tracy tell us your problem?

Half of a minute.. you would think a person does not want sex?
(get it over with and go watch tv). Tracy and Zoe, you may be correct, but for a different reason.

I would foresee that this product, regardless of effectiveness will still have a market and succeed in sales. Seeking endorsement from an association makes business sense. It can be the difference between sold in pharmaceutical isles vice adult bookshops. Realistically, Many more customers frequent a pharmacutical than adult shop. It is Ad Placement!

Ok look this is a two way street here yes its not fair how so much comes out of researching for men like Viagra and Cialis and now this new PSD502 and that it has taken forever for women to get an effective birth control pill and hardly anything to make sex better for women but think of it this way how enjoyable is it for a female to have sex with a man who cannot get erect and if the man can get erect how aroused or close do you get to climax when he finishes the race way before you its not so much of men thinking just about themselves but trying to make it better for both parties

The main problem for women with regard to sexual dysfunction is a lack of sex drive. Never met a woman that had much of one. If they made a "Horny" Pill for the ladies, there'd be no war.

I just wish that they would find some form of Viagra for Women. My wife's sex drive is so low, we only have sex maybe once of twice a year. It has caused some serious issues with our marriage, even to the point where both of us have strayed. Fortunately we were able to get by that, at least as far as I know. πŸ™‚ We have been married for 18 years and I love my wife so much, but it does drive a wedge between us with her low labito. I mean having sex twice in the last 18 months is not normal and for me at least it makes me wonder what is wrong with me. It makes me wonder if my wife is no longer in love with me or maybe I disgust her or maybe I am no good in bed, all things which drove me to another woman once, but upon cheating on my wife, I got nauseated, sick, and depressed and immediately confessed to my wife only to find out that she had done the same thing, because she was wondering herself why her sex drive was so low.

So it's great that they are doing something to make sex last longer for men and women, but it would really be nice if they could help those of us with little or no sex drive.

I know some people think sex is not a big part of marriage or a relationship, but it really is.

@ Patti and you will be singing a very different toon when someone you love is diagnosed with rectal cancer and nothing c an be done because all the funding went to breast cancer research because rectums just aren't sexy like breasts. Is it really fair to condem people to death because they get cancer in a not so sexy spot?

@ Stephanie no i was responding to people saying there is an unfair bias in sexual disfunction research as it pertains to men and women. If when they find a cure for a male sexual dysfunction the frist comment out of some peoples mouths are thats not fair they don't do anything about female sexual dysfunction, my response is to look at the discrepancy between breast cancer research, and cancer research for every other part of the body. But because you have breasts tahts ok right?
