When will we see a herpes cure?

As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta.

From Lloyd Bartley, Bowling Green, Kentucky

“How close are scientists to developing a cure for herpes, figuratively speaking will we be seeing a break through in 10, 20, or even 30 years?”

Answer:

Well, Lloyd, there is good news and bad news on the herpes front. The good news: Researchers have made serious strides and now better understand the mechanism behind herpes outbreaks. The bad news: There is very little funding for that research.

After receiving your question we reached out to a leading herpes expert, Bryan Cullen, the director at the Center for Virology at Duke University. Cullen is hopeful that a cure for herpes could come within 10 years, once funding hurdles are crossed.

Nearly one in five people over age 12 in the U.S. is affected by herpes. It is caused by a virus - either the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both strains can cause genital herpes, but HSV-1 usually infects the mouth and produces cold sores.

Despite funding challenges, Cullen and his team are inching closer to a cure. They conducted a study recently that identified the pathway herpes takes as it infects. They now know how herpes embeds itself into the cells and how it eludes treatment. Now that they have honed in on the physiology of the disease - and its triggers - researchers believe they are steps closer to creating drugs that could cure herpes.

While we wait for a cure, there are drugs out there that can at least suppress herpes. Three antiviral drugs: acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are commonly recommended to quell outbreaks. A physician might recommend taking these drugs when an outbreak occurs to quiet symptoms; or taking them continuously to reduce the likelihood of an outbreak.

And of course the best way to avoid spreading herpes is to abstain from sex, but if you are sexually active, engage in safe-sex practices such as using condoms.

hey guys, I just wanted to say, for people who have herpes, my advice is go on a juice fast =) basically, all you do is drink natural juices. Buy a juicer and start juicing vegetables and fruits. It will give you all the nutrients your body needs. Doing this will cure anything ! It will also remove any scars. It has also been proven to cure cancer "Gerson Therapy", but people these days depend on the pharmaceutical Companies ! there is a cure for everything. If there is a disease there is a cure .. and remember, A DISEASE CAN'T LIVE IN A HEALTHY BODY. Just try the juicing. Do it for 6 months. it will fill you up. The first couple days you will crave food and you might get a headache, but after a couple of days, you will feel energetic, and better than ever. There is also what is called a "Coffee Enema". Look up Gerson Therapy and read about it .

http://www.transferon.encb.ipn.mx/preguntasfre.htm this is the University in the city of Mexico that has the Vaccine I took, and it worked Please pass it on and stop paying for Acyclovir all your life, find some translation of the website they are the only ones in the world producing this vaccine but it has to be by appointment and is a 5 times a year shots that you will have to do for one year only , they can produce the 5 vaccines for you but if you bring it to the USA you will need someone to give u the shots. good luck and hopefully more people stop suffering.

Yes there is a cure. I was diagnosed with herpes in 2010, when I went to my Dr for routine check. I was worried because I was tol there was no cure and that I was going to have it for the rest of my life. What I was worried most is the fact that when one has herpes, they have outbreaks and if the partner got pregnant, the same could be transfered to the baby. So I sought to look for cure. I contacted a herbal Dr. who gave me a remedy. I had nothing to lose because what he gave me has no side effects. I took it for a month from Dec 20, 2011 to jan 17,2012. I went to the Dr. again to be tested and I was amazed by the fact that the results came out NEGATIVE. I am free of that virus and I am now more careful not to get it ever again. So there is a cure. If you can get in touch with me I will direct you to the right place. The herbal remedy is bitter and makes you pee a lot. But it worked wonders for me.

I remember taking acyclovir. My doctor prescribed it to me because it was a cheaper alternative to Valtrex. They came out with a new med called Valcyclovir that is taken once a day. Ask your doctor about it. If you haven't already heard about this. 🙂

I found out about 2 months ago and immediately told my boyfriend at the time. He went and got tested two days later and found out that he was not infected. He has been extremely supportive and has helped me get through the emotional distress the virus brings with it. You will find someone who accepts you, virus or no virus. He and I were married on Friday and he is not apprehensive in any way about my condition.

to "just keep your head up"
How can he be tested ?
You can only be tested positive IF you have Herpes in Break-out.
If its not, it will be hidden and inactive.
Also, it could be either years before it break out or he has the anti-dotes, but he can still be a carrier and have outbreaks that is hardly noticeable.

So, you have HSV and the only thing you can think of doing is waiting for someone else to fix it? That is pathetic. Sorry to be so harsh but you and the others that have posted similar comments need to grow up. Stop feeling guilty, learn to live with it. This is what life is all about. And yes, I know what it feels like, I have it too. Of all the things that can happen this should not get you to just give up. Are you really willing to put your life on hold for the next 10 to 20 years until they have the cure?

There is no funding because Big Pharma makes too much money off their products to treat herpes. It's that simple. You have anywhere from 20-40% of the population taking your extremely expensive medications. Why would you WANT to fund research for a cure?

    September 20, 2011 at 13:29 | Report abuse | Reply
    • David

Exactly! As long as big Pharma is making money, you can bet funding for a for a cure will have a tough time. And I always wonder about just how tight the FDA are with Pharmaceutical Companies. I was reading about DRACO. It has been shown to stop the virus from replicating itself by isolating just the cells that are infected with HSV and then somehow triggering those infected cells to "commit suicide" while leaving the healthy uninfected cells alone. The cure is there! It really is! It's just a matter of when and how it will ever get past big money and politics. It's very sad really. Herpes will have to reach epidemic proportions and really start to cause a stir in public health before anything will actually be done. Until then, the shareholders of companies who make medications to treat herpes have a very profitable and bright future as the virus inevitably continues to spread.

If 1 in 5 or 20% of the population in the US has herpes, and funding is not sufficient to address a cure, I suggest each of us contribute a small amount – even if $5 or $10. If we had half of us with herped respond with a contributio toward research, maybe it would advance the cause. I noticed on my last perscription of medication it indicated I saved $340.00 because i have insurance. It still cost me $60.00 for 28 pills.- that is total is $14.30 per pill. What will happen when I cannot afford insurance but still need the treatment. I would galdly contribute 28 pills worth to the cause for research.

I've had herpes for a few months now .. Its gotten the best of me emotionally because I know that i`ll never be the same. Let alone feel the same about myself. I DO hope they find a cure and fast because people like me, in my case .. who shouldn't have to deal with this type of emotional stress and life problem because of some creep who forced himself or should I say raped me . Everyday I find myself thinking about how FOUL people can be and wishing the situation could have been handled differently but now its too late and I have to suffer for the rest of my life. Its now fair when that's the case. Rape is serious especially when its someone who you wouldn't think would do such a thing. if people want a cure we should all work together to help them get the money for whatever it is we need . I'm sure no one wants to live like this for the rest of their lives, I know I don't.

It would be more than words can say on how happy I would be if a cure was found. I was diagnosed this year and although it's not a death sentence, it feels like one. My life has changed drastically and I'm always put in a situation where I feel ashamed or uncomfortable because of it. It will have a great impact on me having a second child or getting remarried. As I was reading this blog I began to cry. I just want to go back to the way things were before I was diagnosed. I now realize that some things aren't so bad and people should learn to appreciate the good things that they have been blessed with already. When I finish school with my masters in about 4 years and begin my career, I plan to donate whatever I can to this research as I believe anyone who's going through what I am going through needs a resolution. Suppression isn't a resolution. I need the real thing.

I'm 20 years old now and have a beautiful daughter without herpes THANK GOD! The best part is I found an amazing man who accepts me knowing that I have it. I still pray everynight for a cure but you can't be miserable for the next 20 years, live every second of your life like its your last because one day you will meet a man who accepts you for who you are and not what you have. Jessica,

I remember the shock when I first diagnosed. That was 26 years ago, I was 18. Life goes on, I am married with a son. Neither my husband nor my son have it. The only pain now is my super viligence in making sure I don't give it to my husband. I won't have sex (not even with. Condomn because u can still catch it) if I feel a tingle...because I know that I am virally shedding and can pass it. I never had sex with anyone unless I told them...no one ever rejected me initially, only one guy broke up with me because of it. And my husband cried when I told him...he thought I was breaking up with him. You will find love and have a full, rich life despite this thing...

Day after day I feel if my boyfriend were to leave me that no one would ever love me again. It is a crippling disease. Everyday I look online for some hope that a cure is out there. I don't want to be alone. My boyfriend has stuck by me through the whole thing. But I am still afraid. It affects you physically and emotionally.

I was mistakenly diagnosed with genital herpes, but turned out to be shingles as it evolved and tests were made. i must say it was a horrible time, but as it turns out 2% of the people who have outbreaks in the genital region. My only problem today is that i suffer a lot from PHN as I suffered sever nerve damage. Make sure you get a proper test done as a verbal and visual diagnose is absolutely not enough.

I recently was diagnosed with herpes. I don't understand how funding could be low for something that is so common.Pharmaceutical companies must realise that they could make lots of money if they found a cure. I just don't get it. I have never felt so low before in my life. I feel like I'm tainted, damage goods! I really hope funding is raised somehow so that people can be helped. I know some stars have this too, why won't they do some good and donate some money!! Man, I pray and hope a cure will be found soon.

I have had herpes for several years now. I have always been a pretty girl but when I first found my self-esteem started to get low. I thought it was the end of the world and couldn't believe this happened! My family was very supportive, yEars later I now feel that I won't let this get the best of me. I pray alot & I hardly ever get outbreaks, So Im glad that it was herpes instead of aids cause you die from that but I try to remain positive and I will alert my kids when they get older about how they can avoid things like this. I will be happy if they find a cure but If they don't I know that with the help of Jesus Christ ALL things are POssible!!!!! I read alot of comments on here and I can honestly relate to them all But I just want to tell everyone NOT to give up & not to give up on love cause there is someone who will accept u! Take care...

After a year of 3-4 outbreaks- I don't have anymore symptoms. I get very mentally involved with my partners and make sure they truely like me before I tell them about it. It's not that bad of a virus- just a physical annoyance that will prob infect the whole world someday. Just stay positive and you can get through. Only a mental battle. Seriously, after a year most people never experience symptoms again, like me. I got it just b4 my 25th birthday. I'm 26.5 now. I feel great!
    No medication here
    No doc visits
    I work out regularly
I don't monitor my diet much, but I would suggest avoiding nuts and grains for the first year, they can sometimes be triggers.

As someone who's been dealing with Herpes Simplex I (on my genitals as well), I found that's it sucky to live with, but not because it's painful, but because of the social stigma attached to it. i haven't really told anyone about having it, and I'm having a hard time dating.

However, I do find when I have outbreaks, they are really quite minor (i've had more painful pimples). I take my retrovirals daily, plus a multivitamin, b vitamin combo, Vitamin e (when I have an outbreak, I break open a pill and apply it directly to the sore), lysine, vitamin c (double the dose when I have an outbreak), Zinc, and garlic pills. All the pills listed will severely decrease the severity of the outbreaks and shorten their lifespans. I've had three thus far, and I only felt mild itching and saw small (like almost minuscule) bumps. They didn't blister and I didn't experience any pain and they're gone in about 3- 4 days. When you feel outbreaks on your face/ mouth, use Carmex to reduce the sores. I find that if I catch them early enough, the sores disappear in a like three hours.

Exercise is your best friend! It relieves stress, and of course stress has been linked to outbreaks. Avoid anything with argenine, and try to avoid alcohol as much as possible. In fact, my outbreaks usually occur when I've had a heavy weekend of drinking. Try to keep fatty foods to a minimum too. Too much fat in your diet will lead to outbreaks. This may not be a cure, but it definitely helps with dealing with the physical crap. I hope anyone who reads this gets some use out of it 🙂

I found out I had herpes 3 years ago, I was 18 and 8 months pregnant with my daughter. It was devistating becuase I got it from the man I was with for two year and thought loved me. It is hard to live with it but it shouldn't be the end of the world. I have dated quite afew men since and most didn't mind that I had it. It isn't life threatening, can most the time be controlled, and if you are careful there is a low chance of actually spreading it to anyone. It would be nice if they could actually find a cure but if not I'm not going to let herpes control my life and hold me back.

I have this disease since I was 18 and I am now 36. I recieved it from my first "real love". I was devestated to say the least when I was diagnosed. At that time I did alot of research on the disesase and found no real answers. One day a friend of mine who was close to me gave me a book called "Cure Herpes with BHT" this is a strong antioxident that is used in fatty foods as a perservitive. It was stated in the book that the virus has a lipped protien that cloaks it from the immune system so it cannot be killed effectivly. It was also stated that the BHT at doses of 250mg a day was able to remove the lipped protien so that the immune system could effectivly destroy it. Of course being very desperate I tried using this supplement. It worked well when i was taking it and also lessened the outbreak occurences. Over the next 5 years or so I was taking the supplement I was virtually outbreak free. I say virtually since I had some prodome pain in my legs and a few red marks but no blisters. They would also be gone within a few days and not the weeks of a normal cycle. Now I do not believe this is a cure but it may help someone out over time. As I got older the symptems grew less and less and I only have an outbreak every year or so. I do not take the BHT any longer and the disease still rears it face to me every so often. I hope this may help someone else going through this horrible life changing disease. Also it was reccommended that Lysine be taken as well, but I never did take that supplement. Maybe in combonation this could be more of a help. Thanks for letting me share.

After reading your article I think I have some valuable information many of your readers will find interesting. There's an amazing product on the market for controlling your herpes outbreaks. The name of that product is Herpecillin. I can personally say it works for me. I've been taking the all natural Herpecillin supplements for more than 6 months and I'm yet to have an outbreak. I just thought many of your readers may be looking for a product like this. You can find this product by going to http://www.herpes-herpes-herpes.com/

i was diagnosed with herpes a lil more than a year ago so i remember how it was. it's tough to adjust and i am sorry more ppl have to feel this way. i was even scared to take showers because i thought one mistake and i could have it my mouth as well. but there is a point in time where you have to overcome this hurdle and live your life as best as you can. dont be afraid to touch your son or anyone else. you cant live your life in fear.
if you want to try some vitamins there are lysine and ginko leaf that ive been taking and it seems to help. jus be strong

TRY TAKING L-LYSINE TO REDUCE AND MINIMIZE BREAKOUTS. IT IS AN ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID AND NATURAL. IT IS VERY HARD TO OVERDOSE ON IT (SO IT IS SAFE) AND I HAVEN'T HAD AN OUTBREAK SINCE I STARTED TAKING IT. IT HAS GOTTEN SO MUCH BETTER THAT I (VERY) OFTEN FORGET IM EVEN INFECTED, HAHA. TRY IT OUT – IT'S WORTH IT AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL WORK FOR YOU.

I have never had any sort of outbreak. My doctor even said to me, she usually askes if her patients want to opt out on getting tested for herpes because it is so common, which floored me! How could you decide that since a disease is so common, the best solution is to not know if you have it? So, I got tested, and even though I never have had a cold sore or any sort of outbreak, I am infected with herpes type 1 and 2. I am totally willing to be a test subject for any expierements that will hopefully treat this virus, if anyone knows of anyone who is looking for test subjects. I am also trying to construct ideas for a website which will match people based on common std's to one day phase out the spread of infection.

I'm right there with you. Seems to me like there is no real sense of urgency behind the corporate forces surrounding the HSV diseases. i don't feel sorry for my self but i feel a bit helpless in contributing to a cure. i'm not a scientist, a doctor or a billionaire but i am at the point in my life where i'm willing to do whatever it takes to find a cure for all of us.

ur lucky. ever since I got it I been depressed, full of anxiety, looking for God, searching for answers, guilting myself, thinking I will die day by die, staying away from love, why me why me, no belief in the health care system bcause everything is prophet based for them. why find a cure when we can just keep people sick. there is a cure for cancer that a university found in canada but no company want to invest in it nor patten it because there isnt much profit in a cheap cure.... I just dont know what to look for anymore or what to believe in....

  35. 23 yrs and still waiting for a cure

It would be awesome if they come up with a cure for doctors to cure the disease. It's been a long 23 yrs ago from when I received this disease which a condom was used and still caught the disease. Know married for 19 yrs with 2 children and when sex comes around and an outbreak is present it makes me angry and disappointed that I can't even have a normal sex life. I will certainly take all the comments into consideration and maybe it can work for me too on top of the acyclovir which is taken daily. Let's pray for a cure before 10 yrs is up.

id give everything to turn back time, but seens as we cant, im hoping these breakthroughs in research hold the answer to the rest of our lives, i cant beleive this virus has been given so little funding and focus. Its 2012 for godsake!!!! if the big pharmaceutical companies wanted to make billions im sure they could certainly do that by creating the cure, because i for certain would pay ALOT for it. I also think the best thing for it is juicing fruits n veg. prvides you with all vitamins and everything else the body needs. healthy body, healthy mind......

I been dealing with herpes for the last two years since i was diagnosed on my 23rd birthday. These have been the most stressful 2 years of my life. as i spent most of the duration of the 2 years deployed in a combat zone. Being in the service, deployed and having nobody to talk to about it is tough. Now i'm back stateside and still have not found a way to open up to anybody about it. I hope they do find a cure. Not all of us get this disease from being careless in your sex life. it only takes 1 deceiving partner in your life to change your life with the Herpes virus. Every body out there please be careful and choose your partners wisely. donrandell4@gmail.com for any body that cares.

Not even a week has passed since I was diagnosed positive for herpes. I am 18 and am a current University student. After my last relationship I decided to stay single for a while because I knew that the choices I was making weren't the best ones. Somehow I felt as if something had changed inside of me.
I just want to send a message to those reading this... always stay hopeful, because hope is what brings US together. We might never find a cure, and as strong individuals we must come to accept that possibility; it really hurts me to have to say that.
If I were given the opportunity to turn back time and change my past actions I would want to, but in my heart I know it wouldn't be right. We are all here to learn from our actions and to grow each day. I know that some of us weren’t even given a choice such as those who were raped and I’m really really sorry.
As I was looking through the postings on here I remembered reading a comment from another website that said "we are stronger than before, and we can overcome everything and anything else that comes our way as a result of living with this disease." After having cried the night before, this comment made me smile for the first time after my diagnosis.
For the first time in my life I can tell a complete stranger “I understand how you feel”. I might not completely know, but I really do understand.
I’m just one more person hoping that we can find a cure for herpes, but until then, the only cure we have is each other.

I just wanted to add, support is medicine, too. I hope all of you have at least one person who suports and loves you. I don't know what I would do without my children. They all know, have seen me depressed, crying and also seen me being hopeful. We all need someone to talk to. I think if people who give us this disease, knowingly, as in my case, knew we would get their name out their, to protect others, they would stop this. In my case, this guy did it on purpose, he has a severed mental issue and just has to hurt women. He knows he is contagious, and yet he will tell a woman that my using a condom, everything is okay. Because I am over 50, I only know the old school sex education. I was told condoms, unless they break, are what you have to use for safe sex. Not true. I never knew, and neither did my kids, that this is a lie. We not only need a cure for Herpes, but better sex educaion taught. My kids are in their 20's and never ever knew that Herpes and also HIV can still be transmitted even with condoms being used. They are young and never got the proper education. What a way for them to learn, by watching their mother have to deal with this. This is the reason why so many of us suffer from this, and more and more everyday. This is devastating. I agree, we all need to help in the cure by donating and lobbying. It is the only way our voices will be heard. I applaud all of those who stand hand in hand and march for Aids's awareness, now we need to do the same thing. Not be afraid to show our faces and make some real sound about this. If they can allow funding and put a pill on the market which will terminate an unwanted pregnancy, then we know a cure for herpes can not be far behind, and it is being withheld because of politics. Let's all get more educated and political.

    • know how you feel

Feeling suicidal is a common and reoccurring thought with me too, but I have learned that this feeling will pass and you have to realize that having the simplex isn't the end of the world. I am struggling with divulging the info to my partner in fear of him leaving me also. All the while I have never had an outbreak and I still take the strongest dose of valcyovir daily to protect him. I have told past partners and they didn't even care and even without the use of condomns none of them got it from me. It is an ugly thing to talk about and it never seems to feel like a good time to bring it up, Face it, things could be a lot worse~the social stigma is what makes it really difficult. We may not have a cure yet, but there is plenty if effective treatment and as with everything else.........................Life goes on and everybody deserves to be loved regardless of their flaws.

Just want to point out that acyclovir made 17 mil in 1983 with just its ointment treatment... now they have oral treaments that they put everyone and their mom on. that's not enough funding at all for research.... you talk to doctors and everyone just keeps saying no cure, no cure not even that they are researching it. Like they have been reading the same script, its a tricky std and no cure or anything promising. I believe they like having non life threatening diseases that leave us dependent on something that will continue to make them money. why find a cure and cut profit?

There was a research that was cheap for finding a cure for cancer (brain, breast, prostate) found by the university of canada. It made the news!!! But the news coverage was not ranting about the cure as much as it was laughing about how no company would invest in the research or patten the product because it was not profitable for them. WOW where does the money go for all the breast cancer walks I do!?!

I got this 2 yrs ago... from a girl I really liked. She never admits to even having it. I was heart broken and avoided telling anyone. Just started the meds and drank and partied till reality hit me 5months from then. I had my first panic attack and stomach ulcer and internal hemroids. apperantly holding my pain in ate away at me. too me a year to get better. now I hardly get panic attacks but due once in a while with my break outs which leave me feeling like this will be the end of me. No hope. no hope for my future at times. cant even love myself so how can I expect anyone to love me. what people see is a confident charming man on the out side but I cry every night when I have a break out. I am in search of God but I feel the misery of the world and left wondering why would God help me when there are greater evils in the world. Did God save the ant I stepped on the other day? I have found value in life not mine but every. I have become a big hypocondriac affraid of germs and getting sick and this crap spreading all over me. I am tormented because I love women and sex but cant appreciate either. I feel sick to my stomach at times just wanting to cry.. I want to feel love but cant I feel very depressed at times. My mom and sister and baby niece are all who keep me happy in life. I just need hope. I am really tired of the scams people try to pull with some of this cure crap. I remember the first time I saw someone reporting a cure ( I was crying out of joy) when researching more found it was a big scam... really there must be something really wrong with you, your worse then these corperations making money off peoples hopes.

For those of you angry at whoever you think gave you this disease, lets remember a lot of folks are walking around with it and DON"T KNOW they have it. It's possible to have it and never experience a symptom strong enough to go to the doctor. If the medical field would spend more time including HSV in there random testing this wouldn't be spreading like wild fire. I've probably had this disease for 6 years and never knew until I had my first awful outbreak. That's the confusing and angry part about this disease. I can't believe there is a cure or at least a vaccine to help protect esp when a condom isn't 100 % effective of protecting it. Don't give up hope. And to all you judgmental folks just remember you've probably had sex w/ a person who didn't know of there herpes status. Make sure you get tested before you judge. Maybe they will invent a shot that helps it lye dormant and stop the shedding... Don't let this disease ruin your life.

I think I might have the virus not too sure but seem to be showing signs of symptoms. I am unemployed for the first time in my life and have no medical to get tested. I think I got it from my girlfriend now or last relationship since I get full tests done periodically the last one being a few years ago after being single for two years and wanted to start dating again since at the time I was focusing on my career which ended abruptly due to the declining economy. I find myself getting more and more depressed with each day and avoiding sex with my girlfriend hoping to get a job soon so I can get tested and find out which of these two girls that gave it to me so its not transmitted to anyone else especially my daughter from a past marriage. I am afraid to even hug her sometimes. I dont feel like Im all here. Im tired alot and loose energy fast. NOT like me at all so I know there is something wrong. God please help me, Im scared!!
