Gupta called to surgery on U.S. Navy ship

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, in Haiti for CNN to cover the earthquake aftermath, was contacted by officials from the U.S.S. Carl Vinson early Monday and asked to provide his neurosurgical skills to aid a 12-year-old girl with a head injury who’d been evacuated to the ship. The Vinson has a fully equipped operating room and a general surgeon, but no neurosurgeon. The ship’s surgeon had seen reports that Gupta was in Haiti and reached out to CNN to request his services.

The patient had arrived on the aircraft carrier Saturday. Medical personnel aboard the ship had already removed a piece of concrete shrapnel from the girl’s brain but feared that she appeared to be developing an infection. On Monday, Gupta removed additional debris from her injury and cleaned out the wound.

Gupta was optimistic for the girl’s prognosis. The Vinson’s medical team will closely monitor her for the next 48 hours.
